One of the saddest realities about respectful coparenting in Hmong culture is witnessing how offended people get—as if they lived through and built our marriage, or its ending. It’s no secret that some in our community are unsettled by the fact that we can make decisions together and separately—equally, evenly, and happily—without letting outside opinions dictate our lives. But let me be clear: I truly don’t give a s**+ about anyone’s feelings except my own, my kids’, and the person I chose to be their father.

As minorities, we’re already fighting hard enough just to exist and thrive in America. So, please—stop telling others how to live as if we’re stuck in the 1970s. We live in a time where opportunities exist, and you CAN choose your own path. At the end of the day, the only people who truly matter are the ones you tuck into bed at night. Silence the voices of those who are hurt by your choices but have never tried to understand you. Lead for those who still look up to you.

Here’s to us: respectfully coparenting, protecting our peace, and refusing to repeat the patterns of our parents, grandparents, and all the other butt-hurt critics. đŸ„‚ Breaking the cycle so our kids never have to.

Healing is messy, unpredictable, and deeply human. It’s not about “winning” or having it all figured out. Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re making progress, then hit a wall, or even end up right back where you started. Other times, you’ll surprise yourself and move forward when you least expect it. It’s not about reaching some perfect destination—it’s about living through the journey, feeling every high and low along the way.

Your emotions will fluctuate. You’ll have days where you feel strong and others where you feel lost. You won’t always know what you’re doing, and you won’t always be on top of everything. That’s normal. That’s human. The real learning happens through mistakes—lots of them. That’s how we grow, not by being perfect, but by being real and stumbling our way through.

Don’t let anyone (including yourself) convince you that healing should look a certain way. There’s no gold star for doing it “right.” Just roll with whatever comes up, feel what you need to feel, and do your best with what you’ve got. That’s all any of us can do—just try.
