The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance's production of the musical "Cabaret" focuses on the outsiders, exploring “the vibrant q***r scene at the cabaret and how it is stripped away as the N***s take over."

We spoke with dramaturg Tate Zeleznik, costume designer Kayti Sanchez, and lighting designer Ethan J. Hoffman about how they approached this classic, which runs October 2-5 and October 9-12 at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre in Ann Arbor.

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance's production of "Gloria" moves from comedy to bitter reality as an office tragedy is examined in a before-and-after scenario. We reviewed the play, written by Braden Jacobs-Jenkins, which runs through October 5 at the Arthur Miller Theatre.

Zach Bryan and John John Mayer are headlining the University of Michigan's first concert at Michigan Stadium on September 27. While the show is expected to have over 112,000 fans in attendance, it got us wondering about some of the other concerts at U-M’s second-biggest venue: Crisler Center.

In its nearly 60-year history, Crisler Center has hosted many memorable concerts. Some of those have included Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, the John Sinclair Freedom Rally, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Pearl Jam, and others.

To learn more about Crisler Center’s live music history, we looked through local publication archives to find past concert announcements, previews, and reviews. It hosted an abundance of shows from the late ‘60s through the ‘90s, but concerts started petering out there around 2003.

We selected these concerts to show the variety of acts the venue featured and included others that we wish we could’ve seen back in the day.

Jay Platt thought he'd be an engineer. The boat lover moved to Ann Arbor in 1963 from Alexandria, Virginia, to study naval architecture at the University of Michigan.

But a different career called out to Platt after he visited a bookstore in New York City, and a few years later, he opened his own business.

Now, Platt's West Side Book Shop turns 50 years old this week.

Check out a selection of photos from the store's five decades, and read or listen to an extensive AADL Talks To interview with Platt that covers the West Side Book Shop's entire history.
