We've been asked how much it costs to run a magazine, and it's an interesting question.
We're a quarterly, and we pay $25 for short stories, poems, and cover art. This allows our contributors a credit for HWA membership at the affiliate level if they so choose.
My industry experiences with paying authors with a royalty share have...not been positive. So we don't.

How do we pay contributors?
Plus the layout guy?
Plus the web space and all the processing fees?

Why, with the money we make from subscribers and those who purchase our mag. Supporting us means supporting authors, artists, and all the other contributors who create four amazing issues every year. And folks--these stories are good.
Bloody, gruesome, scary, and yes...sometimes hilarious.

the 35th episode of the Mentally Oddcast features screenwriter (and then some) Briana Cox. We talk Jordan Peele, pitching while disabled, representation in horror, autism accommodations, and Night of the Living Dead.

Briana [https://thebookendsreview.com/briana-cox/] Cox was born and raised in Tullahoma, TN — a town inexplicably found on state maps. (It just got a Publix!) She is the oldest of seven children and a first-generation academic with degrees in cognitive linguistics, Japanese language, and speech-la...

Sometimes Hilarious Horror magazine is within 15 subscriptions of being totally self-funded. Would it be amazing if I could pay the writers and artists without selling off my collectibles? Yes, it would.
The cool thing about subscribing to a digital mag is that you get ALL the back issues for FREE with your subscription.

New episode of the Mentally Oddcast has a TW for self-unaliving in our interview with author Kody Boye. We talk horror, fantasy, YA lit, generational trauma, cats, and advocacy. Of course there's a MadLib.

Obviously, there are a zillion reasons to support us on Ko-Fi:

--Supporting a paying market
--Helping new authors get published
--Funding artists that appear on magazine covers
--Supporting the Mentally Oddcast, which focuses on creatives with neurodivergence, addiction issues, and mental illness.
--Shoring up a family-owned publication.

But perhaps the most exciting reason is that Wednes and H wrote a story TOGETHER and it's dropping in the new issue this weekend!!

Just sent out all the writer payments for our next issue, which drops January 25th.
It's dope too! So much cool horror and poetry from new-to-me authors who might be new to you too!!!

And did you know you can read every issue for just $10 a month?
Wild, right?

Perhaps our biggest accomplishment in 2024 was getting so much interest from authors that we had to close submissions. We’ll open them back up in February.

If we had more subscribers, we could include even more stories in every issue. Next one drops January 15th and includes some really bloody, scary, chuckleworthy stuff.

And because we’re digital, subscribers get access to our entire back catalog—and regular pics of our le***an lizards. Thanks to everyone for your support.
Find us on KoFi. Tell your friends!!
