Jay Platt thought he'd be an engineer. The boat lover moved to Ann Arbor in 1963 from Alexandria, Virginia, to study naval architecture at the University of Michigan.

But a different career called out to Platt after he visited a bookstore in New York City, and a few years later, he opened his own business.

Now, Platt's West Side Book Shop turns 50 years old this week.
