The Finnish sword-wielding berserkers' sophomore long-player is a lot. Some listeners may be put off by all of the Renaissance Fair excess or the concept of grown men in pelts singing "Come with us to the south/write your name on our roll," they need not worry, as this delicious feast of strong ale, stale bread, and "flesh from the beasts that stalk us in the night" wasn't made for them.

If Panda Bear’s 2007 breakthrough Person Pitch was his summer album, 2011’s Tomboy is the refrain of winter. Instead of the sundazed samples and Beach Boys-inspired harmonies that made Person Pitch so inspiring, Tomboy bases its drawn-out and meditative tunes on rhythms borrowed from minimal techno and icy tones played on processed guitars and synths. The dazzling pop of Person Pitch is buried under more complex song structures and heavier emotions, making for an album that takes a little longer to say its piece and leaving a chill in the air once it’s over.

Progressive rock bands stumbled into the '80s, some with the crutch of commercial concessions under one arm, which makes the Moody Blues' elegant entrance via Long Distance Voyager all the more impressive. Lightnin' Hopkins [Smithsonian/Folkways]

After a great deal of searching, Sam Charters found Hopkins in a one-room apartment in Houston. Persuading Lightnin' with a bottle of gin, Charters convinced Hopkins to record ten songs in that room, using only one microphone. The resulting record was one of the greatest albums in Hopkins' catalog, a skeletal record that is absolutely naked in its loneliness and haunting in its despair.

Marcus Garvey, released 50 years ago today, hit Jamaica like a force ten gale, its legacy so great that in later years many fans mistakenly came to believe it was Burning Spear's debut album (it wasn't, two earlier records were released by Studio One). It made an instant hero of Winston Rodney, and the album remains a cornerstone of the entire roots movement.
