Perry Robinson Quartet
Call to the Stars

An unsung hero of modern jazz clarinet, Robinson and his quartet stretch parameters and challenge structure, yet luxuriate in tradition. Theirs is a highly metabolized swing fueled by the always incredible pianist Simon Nabatov, grounded by the bass and s**t of Ed Schuller, and flavored with less-intense but varied rhythmic spices by drummer Ernst Bier. Robinson's personal sound comes to the top, a ribald, inquisitive, humorous clarinet.

Call to the Stars by Perry Robinson Quartet released in 1990. Find album reviews, track lists, credits, awards and more at AllMusic.

Vessel
Punish, Honey

On Vessel's caustic second album, Seb Gainsborough answers the question "What does 'Englishness' in music really mean?" with riveting studies in decay. Incorporating sheets of metal and handmade instruments, Punish, Honey's aggressively stripped, industrial-tinged pieces lurch on uneasy rhythms punctuated by the odd mournful melody. Everything seethes with nervous energy, leading to the (usually correct) suspicion that something even more tweaked and disturbing lies right around the corner.

Punish, Honey by Vessel released in 2014. Find album reviews, track lists, credits, awards and more at AllMusic.

The Garment District
Flowers Telegraphed to All Parts of the World

A free-spirited project helmed by Elephant 6 affiliate Jennifer Baron, also of the Ladybug Transistor, the psych-pop conjurers' first album in eight years was recorded in a home studio during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, and added strings, horns, and various percussion instruments to a carefully curated suite of analog synths and vintage drum and effects machines. While 2015's Luminous Toxin was essentially a solo LP, Baron is joined here by returning lead vocalist Lucy Blehar (Baron's cousin), vocalist Alex Korshin, live drummers Shivika Asthana and Sean Finn, and several others, including the Ladybug Transistor's Gary Olson on trumpet.

That Metal Show co-host and stand-up comedian Don Jamieson espouses on the opinion that the Kiss guitarist could have cut it as a comedian in this excerpt from Greg Prato's book, "Talk to Me: Conversations With Ace Frehley."

There is no denying the enormous influence that the late/great Ace Frehley had on rock guitarists: influencing and inspiring everyone from Tom Morello and Mike McCready to Dimebag…

Patti Smith
Horses

Producer John Cale respected Smith's primitivism in a way that later producers did not, and the loose, improvisatory song structures worked with her free verse to create something like a new spoken word/musical art form: Horses, released 50 years ago today, was a hybrid, the sound of a post-Beat poet, as she put it, "dancing around to the simple rock & roll song."

Horses by Patti Smith released in 1975. Find album reviews, track lists, credits, awards and more at AllMusic.

Mummer

XTC's sixth album — and first of their studio-bound trio era — suffered a bit from growing pains, but in retrospect, it's a crucial stepping stone to the brilliance of their later years with a number of standout tracks, suggesting Andy Partridge was about to enter his creative prime.

Mummer by XTC released in 1983. Find album reviews, track lists, credits, awards and more at AllMusic.
