The First Amendment protects the right to publish information and ideas. The same freedoms that allow citizens to post opinions, memes, information and critiques across social media are the same that protect American Freedom of the Press.
Signaling a shift toward fascist autocracy and control of our media platforms, the national and local press are being continually threatened by the Trump Administration.
Situation:
National and local media are under attack, jeopardizing the existence of local TV news, newspapers, and online websites. Trump is implementing funding cuts, revoking media access from government buildings, initiating lawsuits, and sowing harmful disinformation about the media to grow distrust. Social media founders from platforms like Meta and X have eliminated fact-checking resources, causing a drastic uptick in widespread foreign-originating disinformation, memes, and user profiles.
Latest Examples:
Donald Trump is calling on FCC Chair Brendan Carr to revoke CBS’s broadcast license following a 60 Minutes episode critical of him. “They should lose their license!” Trump wrote, adding that he hopes the Federal Communications Commission will “impose the maximum fines and punishment, which is substantial.”
The Trump administration is also urging a federal appeals court to block an order requiring the Associated Press to be reinstated into the Oval Office press pool rotation—unless the White House can provide a nondiscriminatory reason for excluding them.
15 percent of X accounts that praise President Trump and criticize President Biden are fake.
75% of Facebook users do not read below a news headline.
What to Do:
Contact your federal representatives in the Senate and Congress to demand they protect the First Amendment for all Americans, including Freedom of the Press. Allow truthful reporting, information sharing, and access to government buildings and meetings.
Support and subscribe to your local news sources, including TV, radio, newspaper, and online sites.
