Tilbury House Publishers

Tilbury House Publishers Independent publisher of diverse and imaginative children's books.

Tilbury House is an independent publishing company that started out about forty years ago as the Harpswell Press, publishing Maine books. We grew slowly, adding some children's books, and in 1990 merged with another small publisher, the Dog Ear Press, to become Tilbury House, Publishers. Our children's book division took off with the publication of Talking Walls, and it has continued to publish aw

ard-winning children's picture books about cultural diversity, social justice, nature, and the environment. In response to praise from teachers for our books, we began to develop teacher's guides for some of our titles, and now offer a "Teachers Take Note" section on each children's book page on this website, featuring classroom activities, literature links, and further resources for using our books in the classroom or with homeschoolers. Tilbury's adult books are primarily regional non-fiction, mostly history, some maritime history, and some environmental work. But every once in a while something different comes up that we can't resist, and we publish it, too—like Brad Brown's While You're Here Doc: Farmyard Adventures of a Maine Veterinarian, or Jerry Stelmok's Not Your Average Bear & Other Maine Stories. We've also been able to add some wonderful books to our list by distributing books for museums, universities, and organizations.
