This fall semester marks a season of change for the Voice team, and we have a few important announcements to share with our readers.

We are bidding farewell to our adviser, Lilly Kujawski. After nearly two years with us, she has stepped down from her position to prioritize her education. Kujawski provided us with invaluable guidance throughout what has been a bewildering time in journalism, and we will miss her. But we’re excited to see what she does next.

While we await the placement of a new adviser, the Voice will be pausing publications until further notice. But our team is still here, and we plan to be back on the stands again soon, stronger than ever.

As of this semester, the adviser of the Washtenaw Voice, Lilly Kujawski, will be leaving her position at WCC to further her passion in journalism.

Having been an adviser for close to 2 years, Kujawski was very excited when her first day began and, as she is “heading out the door,” it is clear this role has meant a lot to her. Kujawski filled the role when her mentor and former Washtenaw Voice adviser, Judy McGovern retired.

Before her tenure as adviser, Kujawski served as deputy editor for one semester and as editor for three semesters on the Voice staff while attending WCC from 2018-2020. The experience gained as a part of the editorial team proved to be useful in providing insightful guidance to up-and-coming voice team members.

“Weapons” is a welcome addition to the spate of excellent horror movies released in the past few years, and indeed, may just well be the best one of this year. A well acted, well directed and well shot film, it generally represents first-rate filmmaking. For the most part, it successfully blends thriller and chiller elements together, with a smattering of comedic levity thrown in for good measure. After all, what good is horror if you can’t have a little fun with it?

David Waskin’s career as a composition/journalism instructor at WCC reached its end on August 15th. He began working at the college as a part time writer in what was then called the promotional services department around 1998 and once served as the adviser to The Washtenaw Voice.

Waskin was always interested in becoming a published author. When he was earning his undergraduate degree in education and English at the University of Michigan, in the hopes of becoming a teacher, he realized journalism was the way to make his dreams become reality.

He began his career writing for the South Lyon Herald and the Milford Times as a freelancer before going to graduate school for journalism at the University of Miami. That program connected him to a part-time position as a copy editor at The Miami Herald.

The Trump Administration abruptly reversed the cancellation of over 1,500 student visas on Friday, April 25.

Ever since the Trump administration ended restrictions on immigration arrests at sensitive locations such as schools and churches at the beginning of 2025, its focus on mass deportations and border security has emerged as a concerning topic for international students in educational institutions across the country.

Devin Streur, WCC’s international student advisor, said that “a lot of them (international students) are fearful of going home for the summer,” and “It’s more so creating a sense of fear and uncertainty for them and just not wanting to do anything that’s going to draw attention to them or jeopardize their status in any way.”

The WCC Esports team has won a Division 5 national championship. This is the first time in Esports history that the WCC team has won nationals for their “Overwatch 2” and “Counter-Strike 2” teams.

“Overwatch” is a first-person shooter game played in teams of five or six people. In this case, the WCC “Overwatch 2” competitive team comprises six people: Chris Zachow, Nathan Fleck, Benjamin Bower, Casper Satwicz, Matthew McKinney and Andrew Schmaltz.

“Counter-Strike” is also a first-person shooter game; however, unlike “Overwatch”, the graphics are more realistic, giving players more accessory options. The WCC “Counter-Strike 2” competitive team comprises Kush Erdenebat, Sawyer Clark, Aiden Larsen, Quinn Campbell, Munkhdul Khosbayar and Chloe Johnson.

This is the first time in Esports history that the competitive teams have won national titles, and both the “Counter-Strike” and “Overwatch” teams won the NECC-National Esports Collegiate Conference championship.

A group of WCC students came together last month to participate in the 26.2-Hour Filmmaking Marathon for the Independent Film Festival Ypsilanti.

In just over a day, they wrote, shot and edited a short film for submission to the festival for screening and appraisal.
