Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been released from ICE custody after a Maryland federal judge ordered his immediate release amid his ongoing legal battle over deportation. Judge Paula Xinis ruled that his recent detention was unlawful and mandated his release, with officials required to notify his attorney and update the court by Thursday evening.

Abrego Garcia, who has an American wife and child and has lived in Maryland for years, originally immigrated illegally from El Salvador as a teenager. Although granted protection from deportation in 2019 due to danger in his home country, he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March but returned to the U.S. in June.

The government is now seeking to deport him to a third country. He also faces federal human smuggling charges in Tennessee, which he denies, claiming the prosecution is selective or vindictive.

A D.C. judge ruled Thursday that Shadija Romero, the woman at the center of a widely publicized squatting case, has no legal tenancy rights and must leave the home. The court found that Romero’s prior agreement to vacate the property is still valid, allowing the homeowner to have her removed as early as the same day.

During the hearing, Romero was placed under oath and questioned about her history of evictions. Although she previously denied ever being evicted — even when shown court documents — she told the judge she could not recall the details. Her past eviction case was entered into evidence.

Romero requested that the entire case be sealed, but the judge only agreed to seal personal contact information.

The case has sparked major attention in D.C., revealing gaps in the District’s tenant-landlord laws. City leaders are now reviewing rental policies and considering updates to how tenants and landlords are defined, particularly in short-term rental situations.

Westland Middle School sixth graders were shown a Transgender Awareness Week lesson that included a video with ā€œtips for being nonbinary,ā€ including chest-binding advice, and a slideshow on coming out. Some parents called the material inappropriate for 11-year-olds and said it conflicts with their religious beliefs.

MCPS defended the lesson as promoting respect and understanding in a diverse school community. The issue comes amid ongoing legal battles over LGBTQ curriculum, with the U.S. Supreme Court recently allowing parents to opt their children out of such materials.

When asked whether parents could opt out of this specific lesson, MCPS said materials were shared in advance but did not directly answer the question or provide documentation.

St. Frances Academy captured the first-ever Overtime Nationals high school football championship, defeating Utah’s Corner Canyon 37-20 at Under Armour Stadium in Baltimore.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, riding strong play from quarterback Jae’Oyn Williams — who threw multiple touchdown passes — and a dominant defense that held the Chargers scoreless through much of the game.

The victory not only capped a 9-1 season for St. Frances but also earned the school a $250,000 donation to support its athletic program.

The game was nationally televised on ESPN2, marking a milestone as one of the first high school football national championship broadcasts from Maryland.

St. Frances entered the matchup as one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, while Corner Canyon a perennial state powerhouse brought its own strong resume.

Baltimore’s win underscored its status on the national stage and set the tone for future iterations of the Overtime Nationals event.

Two female shoppers were robbed at the Mall in Columbia Sunday evening when a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a skateboard allegedly stole their shoes, including a new pair they had just purchased. Howard County police arrested 19-year-old Izehil Battle after he reportedly started a fight in the mall’s food court. Battle faces charges of robbery, assault, and theft and is being held without bond.

This robbery adds to a recent string of violent incidents at the mall, including multiple fatal shootings earlier this year. Mall employees and shoppers expressed concern about safety, especially as holiday crowds are expected to increase. Battle is scheduled to appear in court next month.

The protest camp outside Union Station in Washington, D.C., was cleared early Thursday morning, ending months of demonstrations at Columbus Circle. The National Park Service (NPS) ordered the removal to begin renovations on the fountain, plaza, and statues. Protesters, including groups For Liberation and Resistance Everywhere (FLARE) and veteran-led Remember Your Oath, claimed their permits to protest were still valid and criticized the sudden removal.

Matthew Gordon, cofounder of Remember Your Oath, said the protesters were not given proper notice and described the police and NPS personnel’s actions as aggressive. The Department of the Interior stated the closure was necessary to keep people safe from construction hazards. NPS has offered the groups a new permit for Stanton Park, less than a mile away. Officials have yet to provide further details.

A Honduran national living in the U.S. illegally has been arrested by ICE in Oxon Hill, Maryland, weeks after allegedly causing a head-on crash that left a woman with severe, life-threatening injuries. Authorities say Kevin Alexis Mendez-Ortiz crossed into oncoming traffic on Nov. 9 and fled the scene, leaving a passenger with multiple broken bones, internal injuries, and a collapsed lung.

Prince George’s County police cited him for nearly a dozen offenses, including driving without a license and leaving the scene. ICE officers arrested him on Nov. 25 during a targeted enforcement operation. Mendez-Ortiz originally entered the U.S. illegally in Texas in 2022 and was released pending an immigration hearing, according to ICE.
