In 2006, I was a journalist with UBC-TV. We were removed from the 15 acres of prime land at Nakasero belonging to UBC, which was then given out to private developers to construct a hotel to host CHOGM delegates in 2007.

That same year, Shimon demonstration school and teachers’ college was also demolished to pave way for a CHOGM hotel on the 15 acre piece of land.
CHOGM came and went, but the said hotels were not in place for the mentioned purpose, and controversy surrounded the land for years.

In 2011, Gov’t forcefully evicted over 1750 families from the Naguru-Nakawa housing estate to make room for a “modern satellite city” project on the 162 acres. That “development” doesn’t exist to-date.

These, and many more controversial land give-aways come to mind when we hear of plans to give away the city square for another “development”.
City square is one of the very few green spaces left in the city, so to learn that it is to be replaced with a private business structure is bizarre!

Today, we celebrate the 65th birthday of our National Unity Platform Deputy President for Northern Uganda, Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru Abuku! Mama Lina embodies extraordinary strength, courage, and resoluteness. Her unwavering dedication to justice is a constant source of inspiration to us all. A truly blessed birthday to you, Mama. May God grant you the joy of witnessing the better, freer country for which you have made such incredible sacrifices.

Nobody should be surprised that Museveni’s brutal son would consider anybody who is not from his specific ethnic origin a second-class citizen! By calling his brother-in-law - who he is always at odds with - a 'Muhutu', he is telling you how exactly he views those who don't belong to his tribe. Those who have eyes and ears know that this has been the unstated foundational policy and belief of the Museveni family rule. They now have a reckless, entitled son who is bold enough to say it publicly!

Like I have repeatedly said, you just need to sit down with several victims of abductions and torture and listen to the kind of ethnic or religious profiling (in the case of muslims) they're subjected to in those torture chambers. In the case of NUP supporters, if they're from any other ethnic group, they'll be brutalised and humiliated while being mocked for belonging to those tribes. If they're Banyankole, they'll be beaten up and dehumanised while being interrogated on what they're doing supporting a Muganda. One of our lawyers, Kakuru Tumusiime, recently recounted how he was tortured, being asked how a munyakole lawyer could represent me - a Muganda. Imagine the backwardness! This is a dark truth that we must confront.

This tribal hatred is being spewed by someone his father gifted with heading our nation's military. You can imagine how he views soldiers who come from the diverse regions of our country. Of course this perception is reflected in promotions, deployments, opportunities to study abroad, etc.

I am very pleased that the Government of Rwanda through its Spokesperson has come out to distance themselves from this barbaric madness. They know too well from their own painful history, the catastrophic destination where state-sponsored ethnic bigotry leads a nation.

Unfortunately, you won't hear any condemnation coming from the officials in Uganda because they all know that this tribal supremacy is the true, unmasked identity of the bloody regime they serve.

I call on the people of Uganda to remain united because a people united will always defeat regimes built on sectarianism - however ferocious they may seem.

PAUL MUSOKE was a young patriot. A committed foot soldier. A disciplined youth leader who went through the National Unity Platform School of Leadership. Last week, Paul's house was attacked. It's door was closed from outside before being set on fire. He sustained severe injuries before being rushed to hospital by the neighbours. Despite every effort, Paul did not make it. Yesterday evening, he passed on at only 27 years of age. Such a tragic loss. Paul joins our countless comrades and supporters who have died under the most painful, brutal circumstances. In almost all cases, perpetrators of these crimes are never brought to book. Paul deserves justice. Fare thee well comrade.

The lion covered in bark cloth. The sacred royal drum faces down in silence. The royal throne turned to the wall. The ancestral pillars of the land shaken to a stand-still in a combined imagery of mourning. Amata gatikire. Obwire bwizire kabiri. Ekibi kigwire. Omukama atulize!
