The Apalachicola City Commission will host a workshop July 8 at 5 p.m. to hear preliminary findings from Dewberry Engineers about phase II of a stormwater system analysis for flood-prone areas within the City. The project, funded through a Florida Department of Commerce Rural Infrastructure grant, aims to document stormwater conveyance characteristics, both pipes and ditches, along with deficiencies of each that have contributed to localized flooding within 18 drainage basins totaling nearly 310 acres within the City.

The purpose of the July 8 workshop is for the commission to hear to preliminary findings from the field investigation and for the engineers to collect public input. Once Dewberry’s analysis is complete, the City will then prioritize recommended repairs in those areas where localized flooding is present and plan for water quality treatment measures.

The 2025 drainage basin analysis represents the second phase of the City’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the City’s stormwater system. The first drainage basin analysis was completed in 2020. Problems within those drainage basin areas were identified and repairs will soon begin as part of a 2023 DEP-funded stormwater mitigation grant. You can view the phase I drainage Basin Analysis online on the Planning and Community Development page of the City’s website cityofapalachicola.com.

The workshop will be held at 5 p.m., July 8, prior to the regular City commission meeting at 74 6th Street, Apalachicola.
