"Tioga County Clarifies Sales Tax Extender Process – No New Increase in Sales Tax"
Tioga County is issuing this statement to correct recent inaccurate media reports suggesting that the County is increasing its sales tax. This information is not true and was inaccurately reported.
Tioga County is not raising its sales tax rate. Instead, the County is moving forward with a routine sales tax extender through the New York State Legislature. This extender has long been a customary practice, ensuring that dollars spent in Tioga County remain local and are reinvested into services that directly benefit residents.
“The sales tax extender is a standard renewal that counties across New York undertake with the State Legislature,” said Jackson D. Bailey II, County Administrator, “It does not represent a new tax or an increase in the rate. Rather, it allows Tioga County to continue receiving revenue that is critical for maintaining our roads, purchasing capital equipment, and providing essential services for our residents.”
By continuing this extender, Tioga County ensures that local taxpayer dollars spent within the county come back home, supporting infrastructure investments and sustaining the services that residents rely upon.
Tioga County appreciates the opportunity to clarify this important distinction and assures residents that no new sales tax increase is being proposed or implemented.
