As our Celebration of Women in Music enters its final week, we're reminded that music history is bigger, richer, and more interconnected than we sometimes realize.

Over the past month, we've explored the lives and legacies of artists like Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Lucinda Williams, Allison Russell, Molly Tuttle, and Debbie Harry. Along the way, we discovered that influence doesn't always follow a straight line.

One artist inspires another. A song finds new meaning in the next generation. The ripple spreads outward.

We learned that some of the most important figures in music history worked behind the scenes. We rediscovered familiar artists through fresh ears. And we celebrated the women who have shaped every corner of music – as performers, songwriters, instrumentalists, innovators, and storytellers.

At The Avenue, that's what we hoped this month would do – not simply celebrate artists, but help listeners hear the connections and discover the stories behind the songs Because once you know the story, you can't quite hear the music the same way again.

Thanks for joining us on this journey. We hope you've rediscovered old favorites, found a few new ones, and maybe even followed a few musical threads you hadn't noticed before. After all, every song has a story. And there are always more stories to tell.

Airing Sunday at 8pm: JAY STULO is back with a heavy hitting live blues album guaranteed to satisfy!
Blues guitarist Jay Stulo returns to Into The Music to discuss Live at the Smiling Moose, the new live album from The Jay Stulo Band. Taking cues from BB King's masterpiece album Live at the Regal, Jay and his bandmates—Tom Thiel (bass) and Chad Wirl (drums)—deliver a performance with a lot of heart and volume. When you add to that Jay serving up some of the best soloing of his already stellar career, you know this is going to be one heck of a listen. We feature three great cuts from the album and we dig a bit into some blues history as well. Enjoy the show!

Finally, summer is coming! ☀️🍷

Summer entertaining doesn't have to be complicated to feel special. The secret is simple: do as much as possible ahead of time.

Choose a menu that can be prepped in advance and easily serves a crowd. Skip the stress of stocking a full bar and opt for a signature cocktail instead. A pitcher of summer sangria is always a crowd favorite, easy to make ahead and ready to pour when guests arrive.

Keep the same sense of simplicity when it comes to décor. Fresh florals in a single color create an effortless, elevated look with maximum impact. A stop at the farmers market or local florist is often all it takes.

When the details are planned ahead, there's more time to focus on what matters most: enjoying the company of friends and family. The goal isn't to do more, it's to prepare thoughtfully so you can be fully present.

These beautiful summer entertaining tips come from our friends at August Haven. From thoughtful design to effortless gatherings, they know how to make every season feel a little more inviting.

🎶 Women in Music Month on 91.1 The Avenue! 🎶

Some artists have hits. Some artists have influence. And then there are artists like Nina Simone.

A classically trained pianist, groundbreaking singer, and fearless activist, Simone changed the course of American music. Her influence can still be heard today in artists as diverse as Tracy Chapman, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Rhiannon Giddens, and countless others. But her legacy extends beyond music.

Through songs like Mississippi Goddam and To Be Young, Gifted and Black, Simone showed that artists could use their voices not only to entertain, but to challenge, inspire, and push conversations forward.

That's one of the themes we're exploring during The Avenue's Celebration of Women in Music. Music history doesn't move in straight lines. One artist inspires another. One generation builds on the last. The ripple spreads outward.

Who are some of the artists you hear Nina Simone's influence in today?

At The Avenue, music is more than entertainment – it’s culture, history, and connection.

Airing Sunday at 8pm: THE GIN AND SONICS have those old school soul music grooves and vibes. There's nothing like classic soul music whether that be from Stax, Motown, Muscle Shoals, or Philly. When you have a group like The Gin and Sonics in your own back yard playing original soul music with the vibes from those places, well, that's huge! Their debut album, Anytime, has become a favorite in the northeast Wisconsin music scene and cuts from it have been making their way onto local airwaves and it even garnered the band a pair of 2026 WAMI Awards for the album and its title track. If you're looking for some original soul music to groove to that's done right, The Gin and Sonics has you covered!
