The Fox Valley: local, handmade, homegrown, sustainable

04/25/2012

Hello, everyone! Happy spring!

I'd like to thank everyone again for your support. Unfortunately, due to lack of sufficient advertising funds from local businesses, we are unable to publish a print edition of the magazine by May 1st. However we will be publishing ONLINE! I will have the website up by May and am very excited about it. There are several advantages to publishing online:

-we can publish current content without having to wait 2 months until the next edition is scheduled to come out

-we have the ability to post other media, such as videos

-we can use the website and its traffic as a selling point to businesses when we do decide to go for a print edition

-we can get feedback from the public in the form of comments

-it will make it easier for people in the community to contribute to the magazine.

I really want this online magazine to be a "community sharing" site, where people in our community can share their own knowledge of sustainability in the Fox Valley, so I am going to have a article contribution page for citizens to submit their own content to the website (after approval by me of course, I'm not going to post anything that looks like spam. All articles will have to be informative and on topic).

What are the disadvantages to publishing online?

-it will be hard to market an online magazine to a local community, we need to entice people to go to the website

-it will be unavailable to people who don't have an internet connection

One of the ways we plan to market the online magazine to the community is with flyers and brochures with QR codes on them handed out at local businesses. If anyone has another suggestion, please let me know.

I will be posting another update when I have the website up and running with the web address so all of you can check it out.

Thanks again!

Kate

The Green Fox Magazine is looking for local artists, artisans, and crafters who sell their work who want to be listed in the "Local Artist and Artisans Directory". This is a free listing similar to a classified ad, would include your name or company name, a short description of your work, and your email or a link to your website. This would be a great opportunity to acquire local business for commissioned pieces from people who are committed to shopping local and buying handmade. And the listing is totally FREE! Email me at [email protected] if you are interested.
