Being grateful that you were given the chance to live while implying a child with Down syndrome is somehow less deserving of that same chance is a painful double standard. The value of a human life should never be determined by a chromosome count, a diagnosis, or whether someone is considered ‘normal.’ History has repeatedly shown the consequences of deciding which lives are worth living, and it’s a lesson we should never forget.

A diagnosis should never determine a child’s worth.

Choosing to end a pregnancy because a baby has Down syndrome sends a heartbreaking message that some lives are less valuable than others. Every child deserves a chance to be loved, celebrated, and given the opportunity to write their own story.

People with Down syndrome bring joy, love, resilience, and purpose to the lives of those around them. Their value is not measured by chromosomes, abilities, or how closely they fit society’s idea of “normal.” Their lives matter because they are human.

Different is not a reason to end a life. Different is a reason to love even harder.

Some love stories leave their mark through faithfulness, devotion, and the simple decision to keep choosing each other day after day.

Joseph and Wanda Terry shared that kind of love.

For 55 years, they built a life centered on faith, family, and one another. Through life’s joys and challenges, they remained side by side. Their marriage reflected a commitment that was evident to everyone who knew them.

In recent weeks, both of their health conditions declined, and they entered hospice care. Their family had the privilege of caring for them during those final days, witnessing once again the depth of the bond they had shared for more than five decades.

On the morning of June 3rd, Wanda Terry passed away peacefully.

Just 12 hours later, Joseph Terry followed.

Their daughter-in-law, Mandy Mae Terry, shared that their final chapter was both heartbreaking and deeply moving. After spending 55 years walking through life together, their passing served as one more reminder of the extraordinary love and devotion that defined their marriage.

In a world where lasting commitment can seem rare, Joseph and Wanda Terry’s story stands as a beautiful reminder that love isn’t simply measured by words, but by a lifetime of faithfulness.

Their greatest legacy may be the example they left behind.
