Willard B. Robinson taught architecture at Texas Tech, and a great deal of his working life went into taking old ranch buildings apart out on the plains and putting them back together again in Lubbock.

The idea came along in 1966, when Grover E. Murray, then the president of Texas Tech, appointed a committee to find out whether an outdoor museum of ranching could actually be built. It could. The first building arrived in 1970. By 1974 a dozen of them were standing and restored, and the place opened in 1976, the Bicentennial year, with a trail drive brought in to mark it.

Here is the part people miss when they walk it. Not one of those buildings is a reproduction. Every one of them was a real building standing somewhere else in Texas first, and somebody went out and measured it, marked every piece, took it down, hauled it across the state and set it up again.

There are more than fifty of them now. A half dugout cut into a bank in Dickens County in 1888, which is a house made mostly out of the ground it sits in. A one room schoolhouse. A blacksmith shop. Windmills. A pioneer mail station out of Knox County. A ranch house from Palo Pinto County put up in the early 1870s.

They are laid out so that a person walking the path moves forward through the years, from the oldest to the newest, which means the walk itself is a century of ranching in Texas.

It sits on the edge of the Texas Tech campus and the door is open to the public.

Willard Robinson spent years pulling ranch buildings down so that they would go on standing, and in Lubbock they are standing yet.
