Rodeada por cuadros de corazones, Rebeca Cuevas Rosas artista de Arcata está sentada en su caballete creando un nuevo trabajo. Bad Bunny toca lentamente desde el tocadiscos en la esquina del cuarto entre unas cajas de impresiones y pegatinas. Su casa también funciona como galería de arte, cada cuadro que cuelga de la pared simboliza su profunda conexión a su lugar de origen en México.

Cuevas Rosas explicó que a pesar de vivir en una área predominantemente blanca, ella logra conectar con sus raíces mexicanas a través de su arte.

Surrounded by paintings of corazones, Arcata artist Rebeca Cuevas Rosas sat at her easel working on a new piece. Bad Bunny played faintly from a record player in the corner of the room nestled in between boxes of prints and stickers. Her home doubles as an art gallery, each painting hung on the wall symbolizing her deep connection to her birthplace of Mexico.

Cuevas Rosas explained that despite living in a predominantly white area, she is able to connect with her Mexican roots through her art.

“My art stems from who I am,” Cuevas Rosas said. “It comes from my roots and my roots are Mexican.”

During the fall 2025 semester, Cal Poly Humboldt started requiring all students living in the dorms to have a meal plan. In the past, the requirement to purchase a meal plan was tied to residence halls like Canyon and The Hill which typically house freshmen. This requirement also requires first-year students graduating from high schools outside Humboldt and Del Norte counties to live on campus for two years.

A new EVITARUS poll released on May 10 shows a tight race. Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton are now tied for first place, each with 18%. Republican Chad Bianco is at 14% and Democrat Tom Steyer has dropped to 12%.

Neither party has officially endorsed a candidate, but the poll suggests that Becerra and Hilton are the main contenders. The poll now shows that it is less likely that there will be two Republicans on the ballot.

Hilton has received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, possibly explaining his lead over Bianco.

The last day to register to vote is May 18. Election day for the primary is on June 2, but early voting is available at certain locations. To find an early voting facility near you, go to https://caearlyvoting.sos.ca.gov/.

After 15 months since the first seeds were planted, local Latine cooperative Aquilli Metzli began selling their produce at the Arcata Plaza farmers market on April 11. The cooperative harvests a variety of crops across Humboldt rooted in Indigenous practices with a focus on corn made into masa.

Jatha Gonzalez Lum spent her first farmers market selling masa with Aquilli Metzli during their second time tabling. Watching the seeds she planted grow into the corn now in the hands of the community felt like a moment of peace.

“I was actually there last year planting it, harvesting it and like being there for almost every step of the way of it going from corn into masa,” Gonzalez Lum said. “It feels cathartic in a way.”

Quince meses después de sembrar las primeras semillas, la cooperativa local latine Aquilli Metzli comenzó a vender sus productos agrícolas en el mercado de Arcata Plaza el 11 de abril. La cooperativa cosecha una variedad de productos agrícolas en todo Humboldt, siguiendo prácticas indígenas con especial atención al maíz para la creación de masa.

Jatha Gonzalez Lum pasó su primer mercado vendiendo masa junto a Aquilli Metzli durante su segundo turno de participación. Ver crecer las semillas que ella plantó hasta convertirse en el maíz que ahora está en manos de la comunidad fue un momento de paz.

“El año pasado estuve allí plantándolo, cosechándolo y estando ahí durante casi todo el proceso del maíz convirtiéndose en masa”, dijo González Lum. “Es una experiencia catártica”.

For years, the empty acreage inside the Airport Business Park on Boeing Avenue has sat untouched. According to recent county filings and public records, that’s about to change with the addition of an Amazon facility. Currently, no construction start date has been set.

As of April 25, “Project McKinley” remains in the permitting stage. Its final timeline depends on environmental study results and upcoming public hearings.

Durante años, el terreno vacío dentro del Airport Business Park en la Avenida Boeing ha permanecido sin tocar. De acuerdo a presentaciones recientes del condado y registros públicos, eso está a punto de cambiar con la adición de una instalación de Amazon. Por el momento, no hay ninguna fecha puesta para que empiece la construcción. 

A fecha del 25 de abril, el “Proyecto McKinley” sigue en la etapa de obtención de permisos. Su cronología final depende de los resultados del estudio medioambiental y de las próximas audiencias públicas.
