Maranda Vargas was a writer and photographer on the Osprey staff in 2023 and graduated Spring 2025 with a major in Journalism and a minor in film.
From there Vargas was hired as a reporter for the Times Standard in April, 2026. Vargas was one of the first reporters to cover Miranda’s Rescue Investigation and has uncovered contract and permit failures.
“I uncovered contract failures involving the animal control departments of the Fortuna, Ferndale, and Rio Dell police departments,” said Vargas in an email. “I also uncovered permit failures by the Humboldt County planning department regarding the old-growth redwood in Redway, as well as Miranda’s Rescue being out of compliance for 23 years.”
Vargas recently had her second exclusive interview with Sheriff Honsal to discuss the ongoing investigation at Miranda’s Rescue.
