That Coast Life Explore Cannon Beach and the Oregon Coast with me

The main entrance to Hug Point is closed right now after winter storm damage, but it is reachable through Arcadia Beach during a minus tide. The name comes from the fact that stagecoaches once had to hug the rocky cliff just to get around the point without being overtaken by the tide. Around the 1910s, workers blasted through the headland to carve out the road you can still walk on today. Standing on that ledge with the ocean right below you, it is not hard to imagine what that journey looked like.

An evening at the Alchemy Lounge followed by a walk on the beach. That is the Oregon coast experience right there. The Cannon Beach Hotel has this way of making everything feel unhurried and easy, and the food at the Alchemy Lounge does not disappoint. I grabbed two of their bigger appetizers for dinner, and that baked brie with fig and plum compote is something I always look forward to. So good.

Not all low tides are equal. A minus tide (like this -1.6 low tide) drops below the low tide baseline, and that is when you really see the most tidepools. It was a beautiful morning to check out Haystack rock. I also watched the oystercatchers and the puffins for a good while this morning before the tide started coming back in. Follow along for more coastal content. 🌊

Two years ago this week, the skies above Oregon did something almost nobody saw coming. The northern lights showed up over Cannon Beach and we were right there for it. Still one of those nights I think about all the time.

S’mores delivered to your fire pit every night? Yes, that’s actually a thing. 🔥
Two Capes Lookout in Pacific City, Oregon is giving family trips a serious upgrade with their nightly s’more service. And toast your marshmallow on a propane or wood-burning fire, your call. The kids were absolutely obsessed, and honestly? So was I.
This is the kind of coastal stay that makes memories.

A hotel where you can watch sea lions from the property, hop the trolley into town, AND eat at a genuinely great restaurant? The Bowline Hotel in Astoria is doing everything right. 🦭

🐦 Puffin season is HERE and I got proof this morning! 🌊
Tufted puffins are back on top of Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, and seeing them in person never gets old. These little guys spend April through August right here on the Oregon coast, nesting in burrows on the rock before heading back out to the open ocean for the rest of the year.
The colony at Haystack Rock is considered one of the most accessible tufted puffin viewing spots on the entire West Coast, but they can honestly be tricky to spot if you don’t know what you’re looking for. They share the rock with thousands of common murres, cormorants, and pigeon guillemots, so picking out a puffin takes a trained eye!
That’s where come in. Hannah and Erik are a local Cannon Beach couple who lead FREE tufted puffin walks to Haystack Rock throughout the summer. They started offering the walks because so many visitors were leaving the beach without ever spotting a puffin , which is such a bummer when you’re this close. Check out their page for walk details and go give them a follow!

Timing is EVERYTHING when it comes to tidepooling at Cannon Beach! 🌊 The moon controls the tides, and knowing when low tide hits means the difference between an incredible tidepool experience and a disappointing one. I’m sharing my 3 favorite free resources for checking tide charts so you can plan your trip perfectly. Save this before your next Oregon coast visit! 🐚

The Adrift Hotel in Long Beach, Washington sits right on the Pacific and has a lot going on. The rooms range from studios to full oceanfront suites, and the property includes three cedar barrel saunas and a heated covered saline pool that’s open year round. Pickled Fish, their restaurant on the fourth floor, has the best ocean views on the peninsula. There are also loaner cruiser bikes, a game room, outdoor fire pits, and a full service spa on site. It’s a solid oceanfront option on the Long Beach Peninsula.

The tide was rising and a Cannon Beach fire department truck was stuck in the ocean tonight. Shoutout to the Sons of Beaches rescue team for rolling up with their jeeps and getting it out just in time. Local heroes helping out local heroes. 🙌
