Arlington honors the life and legacy of Elzie Delano Odom — a trailblazer, community servant, and the city’s first Black mayor.
Born in 1929 in Shankleville, Texas, Odom’s roots ran deep in a historic freedom colony founded by his ancestors. After serving as one of the first Black postal inspectors in the nation, he moved to Arlington in 1979 and continued his lifelong commitment to service.
He made history again in 1990 as Arlington’s first Black City Councilmember, and in 1997 as the city’s first Black mayor. During his leadership, he championed youth and senior programs, strengthened local infrastructure, and helped secure major projects like The Ballpark in Arlington.
A devoted member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Odom was known for his humility, faith, and dedication to uplifting the community. His legacy lives on through the Elzie Odom Athletic Center and the countless lives he influenced.
We send our condolences to the Odom Family.
