Just a quick note to let you know that our documentary Anacostia Delta will premiere on PBS, on Maryland Public Television this Saturday evening at 9pm? And again at 1am. I realise we're a bit late for some of your shows but wanted to share the good news...DC is a Guitar Town!
In addition to the big stars like Tom Cole, Nils Lofgren, Vince Gill, Albert Lee and Mike Stern, the film features a feast of DC musicians including Dave Chappell, Tom Principato, Anthony Pirog, Billy Hancock, and many more. Some of you might have seen the early cut which we screened at AIM a few years ago. In fact, the Director of Videography for the film is AIM 'graduate' Matheu Mazza.
We really REALLY appreciate help getting the word out to the MPT viewing area. In addition to the PBS release, the film is available for download and on video. We're still trying to raise the necessary funds to buy the next tranche of copyrights, to allow us to enter film festivals and show the film publicly....wish us luck!
Thanks so much.

The Jazz/Blues Mashup is "in the can" and sent off to the good folks at WERA. You can, as always, hear the program on Monday, and rebroadcast on Thursday, from noon to 1:00 at 96.7 FM or by surfing over to WERA.FM/listen-live/
Continuing with the generosity of Ron Weinstock, I have a bunch of great music for you.
First, the Spanish-born Jazz pianist Alex Conde brings us a Latinized Monk tune. Keeping with that feel, you will next hear vibraphonist Mike Freeman.
The Blues is represented by Kid Ramos & Bob Corritorre and then little-heard pianist Henry Gray. The first half closes with two tunes from vocalist/saxophonist Gus Spenos fronting a studio big band with Count Basie style blues. Very good music and a superb band.
We open up the second half with Jazz and the Paul Shaw Quintet and then vocalist/violinist Calabria Foti, followed by another Jazz vocalist, Vivian Lee. We'll hear one song this week from Little Walter, the Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup Blues standard, Mean Old Frisco. Crudup, now largely forgotten, also wrote That's All Right Mama, a big early hit for that guy Elvis.
Remember: Don't let the Blues make you bad.
And keep swinging!

The Foggy Bottom Whomp-stompers are the DC area’s best–some would say only–prohibition era jazz band playing your favorite hits from the 1920s and 30s. With a mix of Hot Jazz, Dixieland, early Swing, Blues, we’re ready to liven up a speakeasy, gatsby-themed party, swing dance, or any given street corner!

I just sent off the files for next week's edition of The Jazz/Blues Mashup. As always, it can be heard at 96.7-FM in or near Arlington, VA or online at WERA.FM/listen-live/ on Monday from noon to 1:00 and rebroadcast on Thursday, same time, same station.
This week I closed out the feature of dozens of CDs given to me by music blogger Ron Weinstock. It was a great run. There are certainly CDs I will return to for their great Jazz & Blues.
Part I opens up with guitarist/vocalist Paul Gabriel and then Jazz vocalist Tania Grubbs from a CD with many unusual song choices. Will certainly return to that one. Then more Blues from John Nemeth and Malaya Blue.
NY guitarist Mark Doyle gives us some noirish music from his CD of crime show themes. Very cool. Then a fine vocalist, Rosana Eckert sings a tune dedicated to her husband. The first half closes with Blues from Cash McCall.
Benny Turner opens up Part II with a cover of a Freddie King hit. And I tell a little story about a performance of the tune. Chuckles. More Blues follows, these from Elvin Bishop and Jimmy Duck Holmes. Blues man Arthur Adams is a Helping Hand Man. Clever lyric. But the following song by bassist/vocalist Lisa Mann is a true story and very funny!
The show closes with two cuts from 1959 by the great Little Walter Jacobs with a comment from Phil Chess in the control booth.
Remember to stick around on Thursday for Steve Ghitelman and Up Jumped The Blues.
And also remember: Don't let the Blues make you bad.
And keep swinging!
Exciting things in the works! Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks. Thank you, Arlington Independent Media for the studio space and assistance.

Here's the skinny on the next installment of The Jazz/Blues Mashup. As always, it airs Monday at noon, is rebroadcast Thursday at noon, and can be heard in or near Arlington, VA at 96.7 FM or online at WERA.FM/listen-live/
The show opens up with the Johnny Burgin group with Nancy Wright added on tenor sax. Ms. Wright is a very busy performing and studio musician - with good reason. Another bluesy Johnny follows. Johnny Nicolas.
Jazz keyboard player, producer, arranger, etc. next brings us a tune featuring vocalist Kurt Elling. This is followed by a Jazz quartet led by guitarist Larry Newcomb.
Next, we'll hear the final installment of the Linda Ronstadt-Nelson Riddle spotlight. Round Midnight by Thelonious Sphere Monk has enjoyed many recordings. I think this one stands tall in that group.
The first half closes with a tribute to saxophonist Wayne Shorter from a group lead by saxophonist Jeff Benedict and guitarist Dave Askren.
The second half opens up with a continuing exploration of a double CD set from a music promo company that seems to specialize in Blues. We'll hear Clarence Spady and Laura Tate. Next Wayne Alpern leads a trombone-heavy group for two pieces of classic Jazz.
Theresa James also has a lot of horns in the mix for her Blues. This leads up to the Little Walter spotlight starting with a little-heard instrumental called Rock Bottom. And then we close the show with the wonderful Key To The Highway.
As always, we'll hear a bit of Tony Bennet and Bill Evans with We'll Be Together Again.
Remember on Thursday to stick around for the impeccable Steve Ghitelman and Up Jumped the Blues. You can go to this link every week to get a preview of his program. It's always well-conceived and executed. Fine program.
Remember: Don't Let The Blues Make You Bad!

It took parts of Thursday and today (Friday) to get the show programmed but The Jazz/Blues Mashup has now been sent to the good folks at WERA-LP and will air and stream Monday, August 6 from noon to 1:00. (Rebroadcast and re-stream on Thursday, also at noon.) Listen at 96.7 on your radio "dial" if you are in or near Arlington, VA (parts of DC and Oxon Hill as well) or online at WERA.FM/listen-live/
The show opens with Jazz from Michael Sarian, and is followed by Blues from Mick Kolassa. Mashing it up! Then we'll spend some time with the Great American Songbook when K.J. Denhert sings Over The Rainbow and Linda Ronstadt sings Straighten Up and Fly Right plus Little Girl Blue. I take a moment to set the record straight about Irving Mills. Part one closes with Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos. Get your mojo workin', my friends.
Part 2 opens with Croatian Blues harp player Tomislav Goluban, followed by Canadian pianist/composer Zen Zadravec with some powerful Jazz. This is followed by two cuts (by John Nemeth and Benny Turner) from a two-CD promo set from a music public relations company. Not the kind of thing you'll find at the rare records/CDs store or online. We close with two fine cuts from the great Little Walter Jacobs.
This is Howard Blu reminding you:
Don't let the Blues make you bad.
And keep swinging!
The next edition of The Jazz/Blues Mashup is "in the can" and transferred to the good folks at WERA-LP/FM for Monday, August 9 from noon to 1:00. The rebroadcast will be on Thursday 8/12, same time, same station. (As they used to say in radioland.)
If you are in or near Arlington, VA, hear the show at 96.7 on your radio "dial." Or go online to WERA.FM/listen-live/
The Mashup continues with the music donated by blogger Ron Weinstock. The show opens with Blues by Long Tall Deb Landolt and then Muddy Gurdy in which French hurdy gurdy is blended with North Mississippi style music. Very cool.
We'll hear modern Jazz from the Andy Clausen Sextet, based in Seattle. Should be new to the vast majority of my listeners.
The Linda Ronstadt/Nelson Riddle spotlight brings us two tunes beautifully presented by these great artists.
The first half ends with two cuts from a CD entitled Friends and & Legends of Louisiana. First rate, blues-based, music.
The second half opens with the opening cut of Al Basile's 2021 concept CD about a May/December romance. This is followed with music from Kirsten Thien, also from a concept album. I had thought this approach to have faded (Sinatra did it a bunch of times), but pulled two out of the box from Ron Weinstock this week.
Guitarist Nelson Riveros brings a Latin feel to the music of Wes Montgomery with Leila. (NOT Layla!)
We'll hear DC's own Howard University Afro Blu ensemble celebrate Ella Fitzgerald.
To close the program I've added a marvelous oral history of Little Walter from his daughter, Marion Diaz to the two tunes in the LW spotlight this week.
Remember: Don't Let the Blues Make You Bad!
And Keep Swinging!

P.S. Pssssst! On Thursday, stick around for Up Jumped The Blues with my esteemed colleague and fellow Harpur College alum Steve Ghitelman. Two hours of great blues and wise but spare commentary.
