Happy Birthday to the US Navy.

The United States Navy was originally established as the Continental navy on 13 October 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America.

Today we celebrate the creation of the United States Navy!

"The silence of the procession is broken only by the rhythmic clip-clop of the seven handsome horses. Astride four of the horses, Soldiers sit ramrod straight. The horses, head erect, bodies taut and controlled, seem to imitate the solemn military bearing of the men and women who sit quietly in the saddles."

The caisson platoon and members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) render final honors for Pfc. Karl Dye who was reported missing in action in South Korea on July 16, 1950. Dye was killed during the Korean War and was accounted for on December 3, 2018. ⠀

Members of The Old Guard take on the solemn duty and distinct privilege of rendering final honors for Service Members as they are laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. ⠀

We share this same respect for the fallen in our work each and every day here in Arlington.

Yesterday commemorated Gold Star Mother and Family Day.⠀

Gold Star Mothers and Families are people that have lost loved ones -- members of the military that paid the ultimate sacrifice. This day is intended to recognize and honor those mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of the U.S. Armed Forces.⠀

------⠀

Gold Star Mothers were named after the custom of hanging a service flag near the front window in military households. The flag featured a star for each family member serving their country – living members were denoted in blue but gold stars honored family members who were killed while in duty.⠀

Today we not only remember these service members, but we also look to those they left behind, the families, and loved ones that supported them and paid their own sacrifice.

Retiring United States Air Force Chaplain (Colonel) Martin McGuill's (Ret.) last Arlington National Cemetery service was September 25th at 9 AM. This photo was from the first service I did with Father McGuill in 2003, he had already been at the cemetery for decades (he'd like to say since before Moses' beard grew long). On each of the hundreds of services we were on together, I watched as he was able to connect with each family in a compassionate and meaningful way. He would often quote St. Francis of Assisi, "Preach the Gospel, when necessary, use words.” Or close a service by saying, "May your love, sore on eagles wings to touch the face of God, hallelujah, hallelujah." And, he would tell his groaners.

He touched the lives of so many families in their time of need and he touched the lives of the people that worked with him. We are all better for having spent time with him, especially in the few minutes before a service would start when he would just chat with you for a moment. I know I will miss those times.

Here's one more of his quotes, "There are a lot of tragic funerals at Arlington, but this service is different, it is a big T for triumph."

Off he goes into the wild blue yonder, Climbing high into the sun... Thank you Father McGuill!

Today is also POW/MIA Recognition Day. #YouAreNotForgotten⠀

The POW/MIA remembrance movement honors America's prisoners of war, those who are still missing in action and their families.⠀

Many of our service members suffered as prisoners of war during several decades of varying conflicts. While some of them made it home, tens of thousands more never did.⠀

According to a Congressional Research Service report on POWs:⠀
- 130,201 World War II service members were imprisoned; 14,072 them died⠀
- 7,140 Korean War service members were imprisoned; 2,701 of them died⠀
- 725 Vietnam War service members were imprisoned; 64 of them died⠀
- 37 service members were imprisoned during conflicts since 1991, including both Gulf wars; none are still in captivity⠀

According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, 83,114 Americans who fought in those wars are still missing, including:⠀
- 73,515 from World War II (an approximate number due to limited or conflicting data)⠀
- 7,841 from the Korean War⠀
- 1,626 from Vietnam⠀
- 126 from the Cold War⠀
- 6 from conflicts since 1991⠀

For every POW/MIA Recognition Day since 1982, the flag has flown just below the stars and stripes at the White House – the only other flag to ever do so. In 1998, Congress ordered it to also be displayed on Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.⠀

Held during repatriations at Arlington National Cemetery, the black and white POW/MIA design reminds you of the extreme sacrifices of our POW/MIAs and America's pact to them: That we will take care of them and, no matter how much time has passed, they will make it back home.

I don’t normally post photos of the military taken between services. But these were taken on one of the first services I did with Scott. The angle was just right to catch the horses, and the planes landing at National Airport. One airline even used one of these photos in a Memorial Day tweet a few years ago.

Rising up from Section 64 in #ArlingtonNationalCemetery there can be seen a Group Burial Marker. This Marker denotes the final resting place of the 184 victims of the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon. ⠀

This marker was placed in the section where victims from the Pentagon attack are buried -- the section that lies closest to the Pentagon to this day.⠀

This 5-sided granite marker stands over the gravesite and bears the names of ALL the heroes that perished in the Pentagon and those aboard American Airlines Flight 77.

We mourn their loss this day this year. Those now with God, no danger near⠀

So many loved ones left do stand. Confronting loss throughout our land⠀

My heart goes out to those who do. No one can fathom what they view⠀

I firmly pray for peace of mind. Dear God please help each one to find⠀

And to our soldiers now at war. God guide above, at sea, on shore⠀

They are the best, I have no doubt. Our country’s pride, complete, devout⠀

The finest force you’ll ever see. All freedom grown through liberty⠀

One final thought comes clear to me. For what must live in infamy⠀

Absolutely – We’ll Remember. The Eleventh – Of September⠀

Many people know the incredible accomplishments of General George S. Patton, Jr. during his World War I and World War II roles. He’s known for his robust accomplishments in World War I commanding the US Army’s Light Tank Corps and in World War II commanding the 3d Army. However, some of his earlier impacts are seen right here at Fort Myer.⠀

You can see the spire of the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel rising to the sky in the lefthand side of this image. It lies adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery and is the start of many a full honors service here in the cemetery. ⠀

While at Fort Myer, Patton left his mark on the US Army and the post with some of his contributions still seen today -- just like this chapel shown here today. Few people know about his involvement in the construction of the Old Post Chapel, but it just one of many things Patton was involved in starting and pioneering here on post.

Arlington Media covered six services today for families. The first was an active duty service with a C-17 flyover. This was our third active duty service in the last week. Three of todays’s services were with live video. Two of those live videos were at the same time. We are now able to broadcast three services simultaneously. This photo was taken while setting up for our final service in section 55.

Clifford, thank you for your kind support during our sad time. Arlington Media does incredible work. There are close up and far away scenes with professional steady pictures. It unfolds the event just as I remember it. You are reliable, generous in your sharing, and guardians of our privacy. Thank you.
Arlington Media, and owner Cliff Crittenden, produced a very professional and quite moving video of my father's service. It's not something I thought of doing initially but am happy we moved forward. It's a great memory to have and share with others not able to attend.
My sincere thanks for a top-notch professional result in taping my husband's interment at Arlington National Cemetery. You captured all the essential moments beautifully while not intruding on our service.
Thank you, so much, for giving me a lasting memorial of my sister's service at Arlington. I never realized how much I missed until I viewed your video. Thank you that you make sharing of the pictures and video so easy. The quality of the photos and video are incredible. I appreciate the quick response to all communication.
Arlington Media is responsive, professional, timely-- they do what they say they will do, and deliver a quality product. We are completely satisfied with their service, and feel lucky we happened on their google listing with time enough to schedule them to tape my parents' burial at ANC. We love the finished video! Highly recommend Arlington Media!
My dad (ww 2) is there I will b there one day
Arlington Media was excellent!
It's a honor to be apart of this page... THANK YOU !
Arlington Media photographed my father's Arlington service this past April. Our family could not have been more pleased with the precious photographs they provided us with, and are so happy to have them to share with family and friends. Arlington is a special place to be buried. Having these pictures will allow the great grandchildren, who knew him, but won't remember much as they get older to be able to look back and be as proud of him as all of us are who knew him as an adult. I would highly recommend you consider hiring Arlington Media, as they knew where to be to get the best pictures. I treasure them every time I look at them. I can't thank you Photographer Clifford Crittenden enough for being there on the day we honored our dad!
The photographer who worked at the funeral for my dad and Mom was invisible during the service, yet the pictures prove how involved he was in the event. I am very pleased with the amount of pictures, and the quality. My parents deserved a dignified service, and I feel with the attentiveness of Arlington Media, they received one and a memory we can cherish for ever. 🇺🇸
Cliff did a beautiful job with the video of my husbands service. His work let's you appreciate the beauty of the service.
