Michigan Lawmakers Push to Repeal Data Center Tax Breaks

The debate over Michigan’s data center boom is heating up. ⚡️

Two bipartisan lawmakers Rep. Jim DeSana (R-Carleton) and Rep. Dylan Wegela (D-Garden City) want to repeal the tax breaks that helped attract major data center projects to the state.

The move comes as at least 15 large hyperscale data centers are planned across Michigan, with tech giants like OpenAI, Oracle, Microsoft, and Google eyeing locations from metro Detroit to west Michigan. Supporters say these projects bring jobs and new tax revenue but critics warn of rising energy demand, loss of farmland, and water usage concerns.

At a Capitol rally this week, protesters and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel called for more transparency around a proposed 19-year energy contract between DTE and developers of the $7B “Stargate” data center near Ann Arbor the largest economic project in state history.

As more communities push back with moratoriums and local restrictions, the future of Michigan’s data center expansion remains uncertain.
