Our new What's Working in Washington is on the air. Loved this episode. Check out at around the 4-minute mark, Paulina Bren, author of "She Wolves." The story she tells about women in the financial services industry and what they put up with to succeed is really important. Why? Because it wasn't so long ago that women did not work on Wall Street, or at least not in any job that wasn't a "woman's job." And it's a strong reminder that sadly today there seems to still be some question as to whether a woman who values her career is somehow not filling her best role. Other highlights of the show? Mark gets me to talk about my experience with weight reduction medication, why universities are under threat and why many will soon fail, and how to explain our election to my friends in Italy.

Just another episode from the brains of Mark Walsh and me. Thanks to WW Norton for getting us another great author! And Doug Anderson and DCA Live for being a great promotional partner.

From AI hype to Dolly Parton releases, Jonathan Aberman and Mark Walsh explore this month’s trends in finance, culture, and politics. Also, Jonathan sits down w

I've joined John Cabot University in Rome as Visiting Entrepreneur and Strategic Advisor to the Frank J. Guardini School of Business. I'll be resident there for a few weeks each semester, leading seminars, heading up business community focused events, and sharing my experiences as an entrepreneur and investor with students and Italian innovators. John Cabot is a AACSB Business School and US accredited. I am very excited to join their team. Still doing Ruxton Ventures, and the various other consulting projects with US universities (both as a professor and strategic consultant) but this is my first gig outside the US in a long time. Very, very excited.

JCU announces the appointment of Jonathan Aberman as Visiting Executive Entrepreneur and Strategic Advisor to the Frank J. Guarini School of Business.

My viewpoint published today by the Washington Business Journal: "Over the last few years, Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator and other leaders of the Silicon Valley venture capital industry and community have turned their attention to national security. Make no mistake: When these people decide to disintermediate an existing marketplace or industry they go at it hard, and they play to win." Our region and the Valley diverged in the aftermath of the bursting of the Internet Bubble. 20+ years later the prodigal son has returned. There has never been a more urgent moment for our region to commit to building a technology product ecosystem. I think I have an idea of what to do about it. What do you think?

The wolf is at the door, writes guest columnist Jonathan Aberman. Silicon Valley is coming for us.

As many of you who work with me or follow my career you know that our region's economic prospects are of real importance to me. I am particularly concerned that the challenges we face are more serious than believed and that the sense of shared facts is sorely lacking. This is something I hear from many of you. Dr. Terry Clower, director of the Center for Regional Analysis at Mason, has been generating research and insights that we need to move forward. I've known Terry for a long time, and we have collaborated successfully on a number of successful projects funded by GoVirginia, the 2030 Group and others. We've decided to join forces and engage in a research sprint to help frame regional challenges and provide the data and insights necessary for the business community to lead change. Our first of 12 monthly columns in the Washington Business Journal is below. Tell us what you think!

Here’s the reality: The D.C. region has been trailing national economic performance for an extended period of time.

Back to being a columnist for my friends at the Washington Business Journal. You'll find my column on page 46 of this week's print edition: Why I think that Silicon Valley is the LAST place to get advice on how we deal with the economic and social effects of AI. https://washington.app.bizjournals.com/story/full_page_image/page-46-28/content.html

You can also find it online here: https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2023/11/27/ai-jobs-silicon-valley.html

As I start to get re-engaged in the region's economic development and innovation challenges look for more columns and studies to come. Got some interesting things in the hopper. More to come soon!

I appeared as a guest on a podcast called "Team Anywhere" last week and talked about what I have learned about leadership during COVID-19. I've learned a lot about how to look past Zoom and email and continue to forge team behavior and get things done. If you could benefit from those topics check out the interview. Thanks to my College Ginny Mathis at Marymount's College of Business, Ideation, Leadership and Technology for arranging the interview and allowing me to participate in her podcast.

I continue to work with others to define the contours of the What's Next Economy. Following on from my column last month, this month's Amplified column in the Washington Business Journal highlights the scenario building of 20-20 Foresight -- a group I have advised as they undertook a project of scenario building to provide four possible roadmaps for how our economy and society will react to COVID-19. The authors are two long time veterans of the intelligence analyst community and they have applied their scenario building skills and their expert network to create a compelling report. Learn more about it in my column.

Two intelligence analysis experts decided to interview experts and build four potential economic scenarios for the future of the U.S. from 2020 to 2023 based on the Covid-19 pandemic. Which would you choose?

Nice interview of me by Elizabeth Shea at REQ. "Ask the Influencer." Got to love any time you get featured with a title like that. As I say in the interview, if that's they way I'm described I'm getting it right!

Welcome to REQ’s “Ask the Influencer” series, where we interview industry leaders to get their unique take on the state of business and marketing. In our inaugural post, I interviewed a local influencer who has been a leader in the local ecosystem driving innovation and connectedness. We turn ...
