I’ve been blessed to spend my life singing behind the drums, and was asked to share some of my journey.
After returning from touring Europe in 89, I performed on Austin City Limits with Clay Blaker and recorded his album at Willie Nelson’s studio just before the IRS took it over.
In the early 1990s, I was asked to step into the drummer position following Larry “Bones” Bounds and Ronnie Tanner, joining Stallion—one of the hottest bands in the Metroplex at the time. And it definitely was one of the best high points in my career and I will always be Grateful to have worked with my Musical brothers.
From there I became the house drummer at a theater in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, backing artists Jean Shepard, Ferlin Husky, Jack Greene, Del Reeves, Stonewall Jackson, and many others. When that theater closed, I went to work In Fort Worth with Joey and Jill Floyd in El Dorado, then moved on to Nashville to work with Chris Ward on Giant Records.
I later toured with Jett Williams and the Drifting Cowboys with Don Helms, went back out with Jean Shepard, toured Japan with R.B. Stone, and later worked with Connie Smith. While in Nashville, I also got to play on a steel guitar tribute project with Buddy Emmons, John Hughey, Buddy Spicher, Marty Stuart, and George Jones. along with many other famous Steel Guitar players.
In 1995 I joined Vince Vance & the Valiants, and stayed with them for nearly 15 years. After that I did contracts with Carnival Cruise Lines with Jimmy and Melanie Hodge with the Blackjack band before moving back to Texas, where I reopened my recording studio—something I’ve had on and off since 2007.
Along the way I also started the North Texas Drummers Luncheon, which will be going on 27 years next year. A lot of years have flown by and I worked with several different bands one was Amy Adams and with Sunny Burgess and Chris Rivers then with Dunn & Brooks a tribute to Brooks & Dunn. I work some shows with Buck Reams and was MD for Steve Markwardt and his A-list band . Was Grateful to work in the Recording Studio producing Claude Gray Lisa Layne also Producing a soundtrack for the motion picture pearl Through the years I had many other artists and was a special treat to have Janie Fricke in the studio there’s a lot more but it’s just a lot to think about. All this is after stallion.
Today I still run my recording studio full-time. I’m not touring anymore, but I still play drums on select sessions—and I’m grateful for every mile of the journey.
