ALL-STAR SALUTE TO GLENN MILLER, a special extra-length episode of The Time Machine, with a radio extravaganza in tribute to the late Glenn Miller. This local New York broadcast, live from the opulent Paramount Theatre on Broadway, was an all-star tribute to the famed big band leader, who had recently been lost when his plane went down in the English Channel on December the 15th, 1944...in the service of his country during World War II. Take note that: at the time of this June 5th, 1945 broadcast, Miller had not yet been officially declared dead, he was still listed as being 'Missing in Action'. He wasn't declared dead until December the 16th, 1945, a year and a day after his plane went down. So, you'll hear his singer Tex Beneke say on this broadcast, “I know he's coming back one day”. You'll hear some seriously great music, comedy and many heartfelt tributes. What was assembled as a war bond rally became a happening...think of it as the Woodstock of the big band era. Officer Joe Bolton and Martin Block, the original Disc Jockey and host of the popular “Make Believe Ballroom” program paint the picture for you as you listen to the Army Air Corps Band, Charlie Spivak and his Orchestra, Tex Beneke, Jo Stafford, Shep Fields, impressionist Dean Murphy, Gene Krupa, Louis Prima and his Orchestra, Paula Kelly and the Modernaires, comedian Gil Lamb, Perry Como, Borrah Minevitch and the Harmonica Rascals, Count Basie and his Orchestra, Sammy Kaye, Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Xavier Cugat, Benny Goodman and his Orchestra, Milton Berle, part-time Stooge Joe Besser, Marion Hutton, Johnny Johnston, Teddy Wilson, Red Norvo, Ed Sullivan, Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians, Alan Jones, Guy Lombardo, Lloyd Nolan, Eddie Cantor, Diana Lynn, Brian Aherne, Bill Bojangles Robinson, and Kate Smith.
You may have heard parts of this broadcast in excerpts before, but it's rarely heard in its complete form end to end with all of the news breaks, clocking in at nearly 4 hours. It's a real window the past. CLICK BELOW to hear the show:
