ALL-STAR SALUTE TO GLENN MILLER, a special extra-length episode of The Time Machine, with a radio extravaganza in tribute to the late Glenn Miller. This local New York broadcast, live from the opulent Paramount Theatre on Broadway, was an all-star tribute to the famed big band leader, who had recently been lost when his plane went down in the English Channel on December the 15th, 1944...in the service of his country during World War II. Take note that: at the time of this June 5th, 1945 broadcast, Miller had not yet been officially declared dead, he was still listed as being 'Missing in Action'. He wasn't declared dead until December the 16th, 1945, a year and a day after his plane went down. So, you'll hear his singer Tex Beneke say on this broadcast, “I know he's coming back one day”. You'll hear some seriously great music, comedy and many heartfelt tributes. What was assembled as a war bond rally became a happening...think of it as the Woodstock of the big band era. Officer Joe Bolton and Martin Block, the original Disc Jockey and host of the popular “Make Believe Ballroom” program paint the picture for you as you listen to the Army Air Corps Band, Charlie Spivak and his Orchestra, Tex Beneke, Jo Stafford, Shep Fields, impressionist Dean Murphy, Gene Krupa, Louis Prima and his Orchestra, Paula Kelly and the Modernaires, comedian Gil Lamb, Perry Como, Borrah Minevitch and the Harmonica Rascals, Count Basie and his Orchestra, Sammy Kaye, Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Xavier Cugat, Benny Goodman and his Orchestra, Milton Berle, part-time Stooge Joe Besser, Marion Hutton, Johnny Johnston, Teddy Wilson, Red Norvo, Ed Sullivan, Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians, Alan Jones, Guy Lombardo, Lloyd Nolan, Eddie Cantor, Diana Lynn, Brian Aherne, Bill Bojangles Robinson, and Kate Smith.
You may have heard parts of this broadcast in excerpts before, but it's rarely heard in its complete form end to end with all of the news breaks, clocking in at nearly 4 hours. It's a real window the past. CLICK BELOW to hear the show:

THE TIME MACHINE VETERANS DAY SPECIAL does not disappoint...you'll hear vintage radio broadcasts featuring Gary Cooper in his famous role as "Sergeant York", then you'll hear from the REAL Sgt. Alvin York himself (pictured) giving a rousing talk to the troops in the early days of World War II. Then it's off to an incredible warts-and-all radio presentation of how returning soldiers have been treated through the years, airing near the end of WWII. To top off the evening it's a radio drama starring Hollywood's only decorated Brigadier General, Jimmy Stewart, in a suspenseful tale about a paralyzed vet...and murder! THIS WEEK'S TIME MACHINE SHOW is a great one...a look back at the incredible New York World's Fair of 1939. Vintage radio broadcasts tell the story, a story of mankind's hope for peace and prosperity through bringing all the world's peoples together for one massive, two-year World's Fair...the best and brightest humankind had to offer, a dream of a streamlined Utopia, with the shadow of the looming world war to come in the next few months lurking behind. On these broadcasts you'll hear from Mayor LaGuardia, President Roosevelt and more. Oh, and David Sarnoff introduces a new device called "television" poised to find its way into every home...but it would have to wait, as fate would have it. A fascinating glimpse into how the future was envisioned, 86 years ago! CLICK BELOW to hear the show:

"THE FRANKENSTEIN EPIC" on this week's Time Machine Broadcast. Airing a few years after the classic Boris Karloff movie came out, a serialized version was heard on radio in 1938. Whereas the Hollywood movie picks and chooses bits from Mary Shelley's original novel in what is basically a reworking for modern audiences, the radio "Frankenstein" has much more to do with Shelley's book as published in 1818. One big difference in this radio version is that the Monster SPEAKS (brutally yet eloquently, as he had educated himself while on the run)...this makes for several philosophical discussions with his creator, Baron Victor Frankenstein, as the Monster murders anyone in his path, driven by the desire to force Frankenstein to create for him a mate. A violent horror story of reanimating the dead; a tale of science running afoul of the forces of nature...and religious ethic. For this lead-in to Halloween special I present for you the COMPLETE FRANKENSTEIN EPIC, over 2 1/2 hours long; my radio edit that plays seamlessly from beginning to end...as if it were a feature film for your mind's eye. Enjoy this MONSTERPIECE of HORROR from 87 years ago! CLICK BELOW to hear the show...if you dare...

ON THIS WEEK'S TIME MACHINE broadcast I'll be taking a look back at one of radio's more interesting western dramas, "Dr. Sixgun". It was a show in the same mold as “Gunsmoke” and “Have Gun Will Travel” in that it was a realistic adult drama week after week, not a kiddy western like Gene Autry or Roy Rogers. “Dr. Sixgun” was set in the 1870s Indian Territory, and featured a traveling doctor who could cure the sick as well as he could use his pistol, when necessary. “Dr. Sixgun” was a great show, but as one writer put it, it 'came along too late to matter' on the timeline of radio's Golden Age. It aired on NBC for just a year, starting in 1954. It was transcribed, not live, and it was a sustainer, meaning the network carried it for a half-hour without commercials. It also aired in reruns on Armed Forces Radio and the Far East Network in the late 1950s. Get set for some gritty, two-fisted adventure in the old West...CLICK BELOW to hear the show:

COMEDY TONIGHT! This week's Time Machine radio broadcast features some old time radio obscurities featuring Stan Freberg, John Brown and Bill Thompson. Whereas you may know these folks from the characters they played on other people's shows, I've got three fish-out-of-water examples of them playing roles that they weren't famous for...short-lived radio comedies which became mere footnotes in their long careers. You'll hear episodes of "The Bill Thompson Show", "The Busy Mr. Bingle" and "That's Rich". Laughs from 70+ years ago...CLICK BELOW to hear the show:

THE TIME MACHINE TAKES YOU BACK TO 1945, the final weeks of World War II...and the MIGHTY 7th WAR LOAN! What was it all about? A series of nationwide funding campaigns were held by the US Government to assist in the high cost of defense, through the sale of WAR BONDS. You could "buy a share of freedom" by collecting war bond stamps in booklets, then turning them in for bonds. Billions were raised, and victory was won. The "Mighty 7th War Loan" was kicked off by an all-star radio special which you will hear in its entirety on this episode...it's a rarity from my Vast Library of Sound which is not in general circulation. And, how was the Mighty 7th War Loan also responsible for a certain iconic statue to be built in Arlington, Virginia? You'll have to hear! Once again, it's the Golden Age of Radio...CLICK BELOW to hear the show:
