Oh boy… We took a leap last week and ordered a sublimation printer and a whole bunch of other goodies! We’re giving it the old “trial and error” approach, but we’ve had some nice wins with designs.

A bit longer of a post, so bear with me…

I do quite a bit of skateboarding stuff, and it’s mainly because of the people I’ve met and friendships I’ve made along the way… One of those friends, Zane, reached out to me back in November and asked for some help making a custom deck for another mutual friend, Denny.

2022 has been rough for Denny in a few way, but the worst/toughest was losing his mom. In remembrance of her, Denny had a “mom” tattoo drawn up and got inked (pic 1). Zane’s idea was to have that tattoo design be the start of the skateboard.

Starting with the tattoo colors and a pic of the original sketch (pic 2), I vectorized the image (pic 3) and added some color. For some reason, it just felt like some kind of stained glass effect would look great (similar the Cathedral decks Real makes).

It took a few versions for me to get the colors and textures right, but it was missing something. So on a whim, I added the butterfly. It was a bit random, but I had tried more birds but wasn’t feeling it. Kept going back to the butterfly. Somehow it just seemed to fit…

Fast forward to Denny opening the deck… he messages me soon after, showing me a picture of his mom’s urn. A butterfly.

Friends, the universe is weird and fantastic and beautiful, and there’s a plan. We don’t know it, but it’s there.

I was reminded today that I probably should post a tad more on FB… I tend to post more often over on Insta, but it’s time to be more intentional here…

So here’s a little snapshot of some of my recent creations… A pair of cutting boards I finished up for a Santa Shop at the local elementary school. Oak, maple, cherry, walnut and a little box elder (with a beautiful red grain). A 45° beveled edge on the bottom, sanded to 600 grit, and sealed with natural cutting board oil. Whoever snags these is getting a heck of bargain!

Update: they both sold within 1 min of each other! One to an awesome family friend who teaches at the school, and one to an amazing student who talked through all the details of making a cutting board before buying it as a gift to herself.

The perk of having a heat press along with a vinyl cutter is you can make some spirit wear for the family (including yourself). Had to rock some new orange for Armada Varsity Competitive Cheer at districts!

A few weeks back, Santa Cruz Skateboards did a unique skateboard launch by releasing a “bind bag”. 9 different decks, but they came sealed in a thick black plastic bag. You had no idea what you were getting until you opened it up. A few were rad, and a few made a great starting point for customization.

So this is my take on customizing the Santa Cruz Natas gold foil (you can see my starting point in the last pic)... And I have to admit this was plan B. It involved acetone, rubber gloves, and a respirator.

I’m really pumped with how it turned out: it looks like it’s been sitting in a shop for 40 years. Exactly how I wanted.

Sometimes I get lucky. 😬
