This dog in the video wouldn’t go anywhere near the water for an entire year. Now? She jumps in not only to chase frisbees but sometimes just to swim a lap and cool off. 🥹🏊‍♀️

That got me thinking about how often I hear people say, “My dog hates the water.”

My first question is usually:

How many times did you try?

The truth is that most dogs don’t instantly love the water. Some do, but many need repeated positive experiences before they learn that water is safe, fun, and enjoyable. For some dogs, that learning process happens in a day. For others, it takes an entire summer.

So is it mean to keep exposing a dog to water if they don’t seem to like it?

I don’t think so—as long as you’re providing safe, confidence-building experiences and paying attention to your dog’s feedback.

Confidence grows when challenges are just hard enough.

That might look like:
✔️ Relaxing on a pool float while you swim nearby
✔️ Retrieving a toy from the first step of the pool
✔️ Wading in shallow water before ever swimming
✔️ Walking beside them as they learn where the exit is
✔️ Watching other dogs have fun and joining in when curiosity takes over

One of my favorite methods is simply letting dogs watch other dogs enjoying the water. Sometimes a little social learning (and a little competition for that frisbee 😆) is all it takes.

The key is learning to read your dog.

If they get out and run away from the pool, refusing to come back, that may be enough for the day.

But if they keep returning to the water, watching, sniffing, investigating, and staying engaged, they’re often telling you they’re ready for a little more.

Too often we label dogs as “hating” something when really they just haven’t learned enough about it yet to trust it.

Confidence isn’t usually built in a single moment. It’s built through dozens of small experiences, with someone they trust encouraging them along the way.

Be patient. Keep it positive. Celebrate the tiny wins.

Your dog may not hate the water at all.

They may just be learning how to love it.❤️🐾

ADOPT, DON’T SHOP.

Does it really make sense?

If you’re the kind of person who has no allergies, no particular need for a specific working breed, and you have the patience, flexibility, and time to devote to an adopted dog, then YESSSSS… please adopt and don’t shop!

We absolutely need great dog owners to provide amazing homes for dogs in need.

But is that good advice for everyone?

Hear me out.

What if someone needs a dog with predictable allergy-friendly traits?

What if they need a future service dog prospect?

What if they have young children and need the best possible chance at a stable, family-friendly temperament?

What if they’re older and need the best possible chance at an easy-to-train, reliable companion who can fit seamlessly into their lifestyle?

What if they’re looking for a dog with a predictable size, energy level, and health history that fits their lifestyle?

The truth is, ethical breeders and shelters are not enemies. They solve different problems.

Ethical breeders carefully health test their dogs, select for temperament, stand behind every puppy they produce, and agree to take those dogs back if an owner can no longer keep them. In fact, many dogs from responsible breeders never enter shelters because there is a safety net in place for life.

If we want fewer dogs in shelters, the solution isn’t eliminating ethical breeders.

The solution is reducing irresponsible breeding, preventing accidental litters, educating owners before they get a dog, and holding breeders accountable for the dogs they produce.

We need shelters.

We need rescues.

And we need ethical breeders.

Because the goal isn’t to stop people from getting dogs.

The goal is to ensure every dog is intentionally bred, responsibly placed, and loved for a lifetime.

Maybe the conversation shouldn’t be “Adopt or Shop.”
Maybe it should be:
Adopt OR shop responsibly.

People who have really great dogs all have this one thing in common…They believe their dog will be great.
Not because their dog was born perfect.
Not because they never make mistakes.
But because they approach their dog with confidence instead of doubt.
Dogs are constantly reading our energy. When we walk into a situation already worried that our dog is going to bark, pull, jump, ignore us, or embarrass us, our body language changes. Our tension changes. Our expectations change. Our dog feels that.
The interesting thing is that dogs can read our energy, but they can also be confused by it. One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to “talk” their dog into good behavior.
“Come on, buddy...”
“Be good...”
“No, no, no...”
“Remember what we talked about...”
“Please don’t do that...”
Dogs don’t speak English.
To them, a constant stream of words often sounds like noise and nervous energy.
Instead…Believe in your dog. Walk proudly. Stand confidently. Move like you fully expect success. Give clear guidance when needed, then get out of the way.
Confidence is contagious.
The dogs that look confident often have owners who are confident first.
Believe in your dog before they give you a reason to and then reward them when they are great. Sometimes that’s all they need from you. ❤️🐾
