Chante’s Revenge

As I looked at the phone ringing on my desk the screen read Past Sins and my stomach started to ache. It had been about a year since I heard from her and this moment still arrived too soon. I would've let it go to voicemail but I never know what level of extortion she's operating on.

She started with a normal greeting as if we had talked five times yesterday. However, today I have a meeting to close on a 1.2 million dollar deal with a $120,000 commision attached so this bitch had to speed it up. Since I was sure this call only came with a price attached I skipped the bu****it and asked for the number. She had the audacity to act hurt while telling me some bogus story she needed not recite because no matter the ending I would write the digits on a white check with black ink.

As I sat in a room with half witted men whose wallets were much bigger than their dicks and it showed I replayed the night that ensured my debt to remain unsettled as long as she walks this infested earth.

I was a fool for love when I met my ex Kenny. It was love at first sight for me, him not so much. Kenny was a bad seed and I mistakenly watered him and in return he beat me. Everytime same lie. I'm sorry, I love you and it won’t happen again. The last time though was in fact just that the last time. Kenny blacked my eye the night before I was supposed to be named partner in the biggest PR Firm in NYC and had the gall to go to sleep as if it was ok. So I set out to ensure it was, only from my perspective not his.

Kenny had a growing he**in addiction he thought I didn’t know about. That night I knew I had to kill him. At the rate he was going he would ruin me before I got started. Imagine the headline “Top PR Agent" beaten to death by her he**in addicted boyfriend”. Never. My plan was to kill him with his drug of choice and let the doctors decide it was simply an overdose. My dilemma: I needed the drugs and enough of it to do the job. Now I was from the hood but had long since cut all contact with anyone who could provide it.

My bottom bitch of 20 years Shai though, she absolutely knew who to call. She, my only friend from my younger years, hated Kenny with a passion. I foolishly told her what I wanted to do and she got the drugs for me. I was gonna act like Kenny asked me to get it for him but she would have never given him a connect period.

As I stood over the bed with the syringe in my gloved hands I told myself “It’s either him or me and plunged the needle into his neck close to the track marks he had been trying to hide under his collared shirts. To my surprise he didn't even flinch when I picked up his hand and put the tool in his grip to gather the prints. I waited until foam began to form at the corners of his mouth before I called for help. This all a part of my plan as we lived in Savannah deep in the suburbs where an emergency should be predicted in order to stand a chance for the police’s timely arrival.

When they arrived he was dead. They found drugs and work in a lock box he kept at his office along with another stash in his car. So the case was never one at all. I put on an Oscar worth performance throughout and no one ever batted an eye. They instead brought food and cards with money as if I needed the help to maintain due to a fairytale narrative Kenny told anybody who would listen.

Life went on, my career took off and showed no signs of stopping. The night before the one year anniversary of his death Shai showed up at my door with bags saying she needed somewhere to stay. I opened the door and she walked in. 6 months and a smell i just couldnt get out of the fabric in the structure I once called home later I was telling her she had to go. That’s when she uttered the words that would mark her own demise unbeknownst to her and me.

“If I had gotten a piece of that insurance money I wouldn't need a place to stay”. The statement pierced every sense in my body. Sweat coated my skin like shae butter after a shower. My heart was beating faster than the neighborhood's best double dutcher’s footwork. “That plan went off without a hitch huh” she sang as if it were her favorite tune. It took everything in me not to strangle her right there but I couldn't have two deaths in one house and still roam free.

To date I've shelled out damn near $400,000 in hush money according to the leger. By hook or crook today would mark her final payment. After the meeting I set out to execute my plan. I went to Edible Arrangements in Red bank purposely because it was small and after a short convo with one of the employees at the coffee shop next door I discovered they don't have cameras. I ordered a dozen chocolate covered strawberries and was on my way. I took a needle filled with sweetened peanut extract I had stolen from a friend's house during a dinner party last month and pierced each strawberry and injected it with just enough to be present but not tasted.

The next morning I dressed in all black, put on a visor, and drove to mainstreet where Shai ’s salon was located. Though I paid all the bills I never once stepped foot inside the establishment and today would be no different. As expected the street was busy with people coming and going. I pulled past the salon and double parked. I saw a pretty, well dressed woman and asked her if she was going to the salon. To my pleasure she answered yes. With my biggest smile I asked her if she would take the box inside and give it to Shai who’s name is mispronounced on purpose. She gladly took them.

Shai was happy to receive them though she didn't;t know who had sent them. Assuming it was a gift from a happy client she shared with the people present and kept just two for herself even though they were her favorite. Shai worked the rest of the day and forgot about her treat. After locking the door behind her last client Shai noticed the box and took it with her to start closing her register. Since she was touching money she took the first strawberry ripped off the stem and popped the whole thing in her mouth. It tasted a little funny but she dismissed the thought. As she bagged up the money to go to the bank she started to cough. She grabbed a bottle of water and went to find the broom. By now her breath was getting short. She went back to the desk and as she sat down she bit the last strawberry and drank some water. As she raised her arm she noticed the welts quickly forming on her skin. Suddenly she felt her throat closing. When she tried to get up to retrieve the phone as she fell to the floor struggling to breath. The box had fallen on the floor with her. As her breath got shorter she caught sight of the now turned over box and saw a heart with the word always written inside of it. The same image is handwritten on the bottom of every letter we ever wrote to each other when we were kids. At that moment she knew what was happening and why. There in her salon that was paid for in blood money Shai died due to an allergic reaction according to the death certificate they gave her mother.

The death of my good friend was so devastating that I had to keep all my hard earned money for myself. Shai was another victim of exploited weaknesses and underestimating me at my worst. Rest in peace bitch you wont be missed.
