2nd Lieutenant John E. Butts
June 23 – Remembering Today

On June 23, 1944, during the intense fighting in Normandy, 2nd Lt. John E. Butts led a brave assault against a heavily fortified German position near Flottemanville-Hague.

Despite being wounded earlier in combat and refusing evacuation, he stayed with his platoon. During the attack, he was seriously hit by machine-gun fire. Even then, he continued to lead—ordering a flanking move while he advanced alone to draw enemy fire.

Severely wounded again, he crawled forward under heavy fire and came within yards of the enemy position before he was killed. His actions helped his unit destroy the strongpoint and secure the objective.

He was only 21 years old. His courage, leadership, and sacrifice remain a lasting reminder of true heroism.

🇺🇸 June 22, 1945: End of the Battle of Okinawa

On this day 81 years ago, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II came to an end. After nearly three months of relentless fighting, Allied forces overcame the last major pockets of resistance on Okinawa, marking a decisive moment in the Pacific War.

The Battle of Okinawa claimed the lives of more than 200,000 soldiers and civilians, leaving deep scars that are remembered to this day. It stands as a powerful reminder of the immense human cost of war and the value of peace.

As we remember June 22, 1945, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all those who endured the battle, and we reflect on the lessons history continues to teach us.

After another long day in the Vietnam jungle, these guys finally get a chance to kick back. They're playing cards, cracking jokes, smoking, and sharing a few beers and some whiskey. For a little while, the war fades into the background. They don't know what tomorrow will bring—but tonight, they're just enjoying the moment, together.
