In a major pivot towards entertainment attractions, Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, North Carolina is replacing its Belk Men’s Store with a new Level99, a social gaming venue which plans to open in 2027.

A flashback to when Woolworth was one of the premier food service companies in addition to being an iconic retailer: this newspaper advertisement from August 12, 1965 for the Harvest House Cafeteria at the now closing Ford City Mall in Chicago.

Harvest House was one of several food concessions Woolworth had during the era in addition to its famous luncheonettes. The cafeterias featured upgraded decor and a relaxed atmosphere, even sometimes including cocktail lounges. The company was able to maintain momentum in the restaurant business for many years, until tastes changed and more modern options became popular.

Big changes are coming to an Atlanta-area mall.

Two prominent Dallas-area mall sites are apparently poised for redevelopment by local professional sports franchises.

The Dallas Stars have announced their intention to relocate its home ice to the Willow Bend Mall site in Plano, Texas as part of The Bend, a proposed mixed-use redevelopment.

Across town, the Dallas Mavericks are considering proposals that would either relocate the basketball team’s arena to the former Valley View Mall site in North Dallas or to the current Dallas City Hall site downtown, with a decision expected soon.

Both teams currently share the American Airlines Arena downtown, but have been embroiled in a number of contract disputes in recent years.

Macy's and Bloomingdale's are on a roll, posting their biggest fiscal quarterly comparable sales increase in four years, per a recent CNBC article.

Macy’s, Inc. reported a 1.6% comparable sales gain overall at its namesake banner, but in the 200 stores that have been upgraded to its Bold New Chapter format, the number doubled to 3%, showing that the company’s investments in those stores is paying off.

At Bloomingdale’s, quarterly comparable sales increased by 10.2%, led by increased marketing, popular buzzy brands and the misfortunes of rival Saks Global. CEO Tony Spring pointed out to reporters that the latter factor was not the sole reason for growth, while acknowledging that sales were certainly helped by that situation.

Saks Global had initially planned to close its Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas in March 2025 after a lease dispute but reversed its decision. This time, the company says the decision to close its historic flagship is final and it plans to focus its operations at its nearby NorthPark Center store.
