đ My brother called my newborn a disgrace. he didnât realize who was standing behind him, hearing every word. when he turned around, his smile vanishedâand that was only the beginning....
While holding my son for the first time, my brother pointed a finger at me. âI wonder where the dad is,â he said, the words slithering out between bursts of laughter.
He didn't know my husband, Samuel, had died four months ago. He also didn't know my father-in-law, a man carved from granite and two decades as a Navy SEAL, was standing right behind him.
My brother, Ethan, had always been obsessed with my humiliation. So, I planned for this. Iâd spent the last week of my pregnancy coordinating with Samuelâs family, my friends, and even Ethanâs own long-suffering wife.
âMy sister here decided to âgo Black and never go back,ââ he sneered, making air quotes with his fingers. âWhat was she expecting? For some guy to become father of the year? Iâm recording this to immortalize her stupidity for the whole world to see.â
I feigned shock. âHow could you say that? Youâd speak differently if you knew him, if you knew why he wasnât here,â I yelled, dropping him a breadcrumb.
But Ethan needed to stomp on people. âIf I knew him, Iâd probably laugh even harder,â he shot back. âYouâve always been stupid and gullible. Itâs how I convinced you that you lost your own birthday money, and how I convinced Mom you were the one stealing her pain patches when she had cancer.â
He was digging his own grave.
âAre you just saying all this because I have a child now, and youâre insecure that you canât have one?â I asked, aiming for his deepest wound.
He exploded. âHow dare you? Iâm saying it because this baby is a disgrace! If I wanted to have kids, I would. My wife does as I say. Our parents do as I say! My whole life, Iâve gotten what I wanted!â
A real, slightly unhinged laugh escaped my lips.
âWhatâs so funny?â he yelled.
I didnât respond. I just looked past him, at the literal destruction waiting for him.
He whipped his head around, probably expecting to see a doctor. Instead, he saw them.
I have never seen a personâs skin color actually change in real time, but his did, draining from furious red to a pasty, sickly gray. Assembled in the hallway, their faces a gallery of grim judgment, were our parents; our family lawyer; his own wife, Jessica, her expression cold as ice; his boss; and for the final touch, his intern, Cherylâhis affair partner.
His smile vanished. And that was only the beginning. Read more in Comment or Most relevant -> All Comments đ¨ď¸
