Dolly Parton Mural

Asheville, North Carolina

The Dolly Parton and RuPaul mural in Asheville is a popular public artwork located on the outside wall of the Beauty Parade hair salon off Haywood Road in West Asheville.

Painted by local Asheville muralist Gus Cutty. Features vintage, big-haired portraits of country music icon Dolly Parton and Atlanta-born performer RuPaul.
Gus Cutty painted the Dolly Parton portion in 2018 using a 1960s-era reference photo.The RuPaul section was added in 2021 to celebrate Southern pop culture royalty.

The artwork gained national attention and was featured on an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race.

The site became an important local gathering place and makeshift memorial for fans leaving flowers and notes after Dolly Parton's passing.

Little Cataloochee Trail is a 10.6-mile challenging out-and-back trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Waynesville, North Carolina.

Elevation Gain: 2,368 feet

Time: About 5.5 to 6.5 hours to complete

Allowed Uses: Hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding (dogs are not allowed)

Best Time to Visit: March through November

The trail passes through the historic Little Cataloochee community, featuring the iconic Little Cataloochee Baptist Church (built in 1889), the Cook Cabin, and the Jim Hannah Cabin.

Expect dense forest, stream crossings, old stone walls, and a chance to spot local wildlife like elk.

Walked directly up on A Black Timber Rattlesnake on a trail Deep in the Woods of WNC


A black phase timber rattlesnake is a dark-colored morph of the venomous [Crotalus horridus] featuring a solid black or dark gray head and dark crossbands over a heavily dark-pigmented body.

Unlike the lighter yellow phase, black phase snakes have a dark brown, grey, or solid black background. They possess a solid black head and black eyes. Dark chevron or V-shaped crossbands may still be visible, though heavily camouflaged by the dark background.

Individual snakes remain either yellow-phase or black-phase for their entire lives; they do not change color with the seasons.

Color phases vary by region, with dark phases more frequently observed in northern or mountainous deciduous forests.
