The reopening was the equivalent of 350 small businesses all opening at once. It was quite the way to celebrate being a year past Helene. **No photographers were harmed in the opening stampede.**

Deep in the holler of Roaring Fork, NC, we found a disabled man, Arlic, and his elderly mother with a new batch of kittens. They’d been cut off from any outside communication with their family and doctors, only communicating with neighbors. for a whole week since the storm. While we were out documenting, we carried a truckful of supplies, including Starlink mobile internet.

Helene taught us communication is absolutely vital in the first few days after a storm. We were able to get internet restored for them thanks to our friend who helped connect us to an international organization. That organization managed to get us thousands of dollars worth of Starlink systems to set up for those who needed it in the most remote areas. This allowed them to communicate with their family who could get them their medication, as well as medication for their newborn kittens who were suffering from eye infections.

We learned a lot about what to do in disasters, but if we could relay anything for if it happens again: Let’s get the coms out first and get everyone connected within the first 48 hours if possible to save as many lives as possible.

In the 2 weeks following the flood with , we spent a lot of time in Burnsville, NC, a rural community that arguably got hit harder than any other town in Western North Carolina. This little girl pulled some heartstrings as she lit up when the food came out at the temporary distribution center set up in the middle of town.

First photo by our buddy . Reggie, it took me forever to figure out where you shot this photo from and what zoom you had your lens, but I think I got pretty damn close? - Stephan

We've shot for American Red Cross for years on the Biomed side, so when our friends at ARC Bio in NYC called to see if we were okay, we struck up a conversation and got connected to their humanitarian department in Washington DC, and for the next month, we spent countless hours boots-on-ground covering their response to Helene.

We're forever grateful for the people that came from far and wide to respond in the immediate aftermath of the storm and glad we could play a small part in documenting it and its heroes.
