We are saddened to learn that the legendary neo-soul singer, D’Angelo passed away today at 51.

“The Richmond-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist didn’t just help create neo-soul, he refined it. His music, “thick as molasses,” as Rolling Stone once wrote, carried a voice “instantly classic, almost out of time.” It was D’Angelo who inspired Motown executive Kedar Massenburg to coin the term “neo-soul” in the first place, a way to describe a sound both rooted in gospel and impossibly modern.” - article by
