Champagne:
The rhythm of the verses is built around the droning lyric, āchampagne for my real friends / real pain for my sham friendsā. This phrase is repeated throughout the verses in a rhythmic pattern that lends itself to a 5/4 time signature. The phrase, āChampagne for my real friends / real pain for my sham friendsā is a quote from David Benioffās book, The 25th Hour. When itās repeated over and over again it gives the lyrics a droning effect intended to morph them into the heartbeat of the tune, becoming part of the rhythm section.
In the second part of the song, the rhythmic pulse shifts into a 6/8 time signature and a rock & roll feel. It introduces āThe Lone Rangerā, which represents a glimpse at a different, unknown realityā scary and lonely, but also mysterious and hopeful. The song returns to the 5/4 time signature during the poem, which is recited in the middle of the piece. The poetic monologue is a reflection of a narrator who struggles to accept the complicit nature and painful reality of low-wage employment. This struggle is juxtaposed with the imagery conveyed in the rock and roll section of this song. Ultimately, this song is like an exhibit in a museum of contemporary art. It leaves the listener with an impression which is completely dependent on their own life circumstances and personal state of mind.
