Last month, we had an incredible time hosting our Fall 2025 Issue Celebration at The Montford Rooftop Bar in downtown Asheville. Following the anniversary of Hurricane Helene, we are more thankful than ever to have gotten the opportunity to celebrate the contributors, advertisers, and community partners that make our publication possible. Every edition of WNC Magazine is a celebration of our region, and we hope our Fall 2025 issue has done so a little extra as we recognize just a few of the amazing stories of rebuilding and resiliency one year after the storm.

We extend thanks to our venue The Montford Rooftop Bar, our talented photographer Camilla Calnan Photography, and each of our guests.

When Hurricane Helene blew through our region a year ago, it took the lives of many, and destroyed businesses, communities, and landscapes. In "One Year Later: The Storm That Reshaped WNC's Landscape", we get to know a few of the people that have contributed to our region's redevelopment, including Spencer Bost of Downtown Spruce Pine, Chad Schoenauer of Old Fort Bike Shop, Amy Kelly of The Radical Hotel, and D. Tyrell McGirt and Steph Monson Dahl with Asheville City Government. Without the resiliency that they—and so many others—have displayed, Western North Carolina wouldn't be where it is today.

At WNC magazine, our hearts are with all those who experienced loss in the storm on this anniversary. Memorial events are taking place throughout Western North Carolina this weekend; check out your local events calendar to find one near you.

“Pottery became more than functional; it became a direct link to my ancestors. When I work with clay now, time disappears," says Tara McCoy, a Cherokee potter whose crafting legacy goes back three generations.

To learn more about McCoy and other Appalachian potters of the past and present, check out "Earth's Abundance" by Denise K. James in our latest fall issue.

Reintroduced 13 years ago, elk were once extinct in our region. But thanks to the conservation efforts of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this once-endangered species is thriving in its mountain home. Although elk roam the park year-round, autumn is one of the best times of year to observe them since it's their mating season, known as the Rut. Learn more about these striking creatures in "Return of the Elk" by senior editor Allison Sherman.
