October is here. The leaves are changing, the flannels are coming out, the c***r is hot—and around here, we’ve been thinking a lot about the upcoming elections, what it means to have a voice, and what it means to actually use it.

This month at Dope Dharma, our theme is VOTE FOR YOUR RIGHTS.

We’re going to talk about q***r history, community, equality, the rights generations before us fought for, and why staying informed, getting involved, and participating in our democracy matters.

We’ll be featuring five Dope Dharma Haus designs leading up to Election Day in November—five designs with five different messages, all rooted in the things we value and care about: equality, community, love, creativity, and showing up when it matters.

This is what we’re showing up for. Community, connection, chosen family, q***r joy, and the freedom to live out loud. Pride reminds us that none of our rights were won alone—and none of them are protected alone, either.

Some messages don’t need much explaining. We believe power belongs to the people—not kings, tyrants, fascists, or anyone who thinks democracy belongs only to them.

So grab something pumpkin-flavored and hang out with us this October. We’ll talk history, share some art, celebrate our community, make a little mischief—and remind each other that our voices matter.
Like. Comment. Follow. Share. And most important, VOTE.

Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s finally knowing ourselves well enough to recognize what we want. Maybe it’s caring a whole lot less about who we were told we were supposed to be.

Maybe, after years of checking all the boxes, some of us finally ask: But am I happy?

I don’t think there’s one answer. I just know that somewhere along the way, my life started feeling more like mine.

More laughter. More adventure. More ridiculousness. More freedom. More love. More joy.

And, apparently, getting engaged to a beautiful woman on a bridge in Germany.

So yeah. Maybe we should talk about that.

If you came out later in life, what do you think changed?

Rest in grace & love, Saint Dolly—our eternal Queen of Appalachia. 🎶🦋💖

Forever grateful to artist Gus Cutty for gifting Asheville with one of the most magnificent Dolly murals in the country. Though we have cherished it for years, its profound magnitude in bringing our community together to mourn our loss and celebrate the legendary life of Dolly Parton is nothing short of remarkable.

Dolly continually reminded us how art can change the world for the better. In her honor, please continue her legacy by supporting the local public artists who bring beauty to our streets & lives every day.

The Sapphic Institute for Flannel Studies needs your help.

Our preliminary findings suggest that once two le****ns combine households, flannel ownership increases at a rate scientists are calling “statistically gay.”

Please contribute to this important research by selecting your answer and reporting your household flannel count below. Please answer honestly. There are no wrong answers, except pretending you don’t need another flannel. 🤪😁🪓🪵🌲

Before I called Asheville home, I lived in Ringgold, Georgia. It’s the little town near Chattanooga where Dolly Parton and Carl Dean quietly got married in 1966.
Ringgold has always held onto that little piece of Dolly history. There’s a beautiful mural of her downtown. We celebrate Dolly Days. We run a Dolly 5K. For years, her story has quite literally been painted into the place I called home.

But Dolly belonged to so many communities in so many different ways.
She was proudly Appalachian. A songwriter and storyteller. A fiercely smart businesswoman. A philanthropist who gave millions of children their first books. A woman of faith who never seemed to believe that loving someone required understanding everything about them first.
For decades, Dolly welcomed and defended the LGBTQ+ community with the same warmth she extended to so many others. She reminded us that faith and acceptance didn’t have to be enemies, and that there was room at the table for all of us.

Maybe that’s why these murals felt like the right way to remember her.
Different artists. Different cities. Different versions of Dolly.

Thank you, Dolly. For the music, the laughter, the books, the courage, and the kindness. Love, Niko.

Each mural artist and location is credited on its slide. Which one is your favorite? Anybody ready for a road trip?
