For Mother’s Day, we headed out to Otter Falls via the Taylor River Trail for a little bike-to-hike adventure.

Yep… this was the hike where we found the mysterious jelly blob. 😂

But the best part of the day was biking through the forest to a remote lake tucked beneath an incredible waterfall.

We biked 2.5 miles in, hiked another 1.5 to the falls, and spent the day soaking in the kind of PNW beauty that never gets old. 💚

This trail really puts your gym membership into question! 😅

We knew it was a climb…
we just didn’t realize how many STAIRS that meant! 😅

This hike is short but steep with a mix of forest trail, roots, rock, ladders, and what feels like endless stairs. The views at the top? Glorious!

Stawamus Chief – First Peak ⛰️
📍 Squamish, BC
📏 2.5 miles round trip
⬆️ 1,700 ft gain
⏱️ 1.5–3 hours depending on pace

We had the honor of being interviewed for a magazine article in a section called “Live like the mountain is out“ in the 425 magazine!

✍️ Thanks to Hailee Wickersham for interviewing us!

Here’s a excerpt…
“ “When we first moved here (from Texas in 2020), the best advice we got was to ‘live like the mountain is out,’ and so we hiked, rain or shine, snow or fog,” Dev said. “It built our kids up a good bit, and now we have a 17-year-old who goes hiking without us and takes his buddies along.”

In recent years, the couple has worked with their kids’ school in Kent to take students ages 12-15 on day hikes to places such as Rattlesnake Ridge, Deception Pass State Park, and even snow hiking at Mount Rainier National Park.

“Hiking gives you such an appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors and an opportunity to really slow down,” Dev said, “and see the magnificent in the imperfection.”
Since they’re trekkers well-versed in Washington’s abundance of trail systems, we asked the Chapmans abou their favorite hikes for kids…”

You gotta love middle school track! 🫣 And the awkward giggle…

Everyone starts somewhere, it’s just some people were a little too close for comfort. 😂

This was my son’s first time throwing the discus ever. He never practiced a throw in the ring and his first was on meet day.

But major props to the guy for jumping out of the way! 🙌

Somehow everyone made it out injury-free! 🙏 PTL!

Wanted to do this well known hike, and turns out we signed up for stairs, ladders, and a full-body workout, too! 😅

The Stawamus Chief (1st Peak) is one of the most popular hikes near Vancouver—and now we get why. It’s short but steep (~3.7 km, 540 m gain) and doesn’t let up.

Definitely had a few “are we sure about this?” moments… but we made it to the top injury-free and the views did not disappoint.

Would you do it?

1st Peak (most popular)
•2.3 miles (3.7 km) round trip
•Elevation gain: 1,770 ft (540 m)
•Difficulty: Moderate–hard (very steep, lots of stairs)
•On trail: 2 hours
•Highlights: Wide granite slabs, incredible views of Howe Sound
