Bayfield County is facing a critical shortage of volunteer emergency medical responders, a growing problem that left the closest ambulance unable to answer more than 100 calls last year.

As aging volunteers step back and modern economic pressures make recruiting difficult, county officials and local towns are searching for a solution to support the fragile system. In the first of a two-part series, emergency services officials break down the funding limits, training demands, and rising call volumes driving the current crisis.

Read the full report on what is causing the strain and the safety nets being proposed:

In Wisconsin, especially in the northern part of the state where larger cities are rare, volunteer ambulance services have been a tradition for the better part of a century.

Those beautiful carpets of great white trilliums blooming across Wisconsin woods are a welcome sight each spring, but picking them does far more damage than you might think.

A single trillium bloom represents up to a decade of growth from a seed, and the plants can live for up to 50 years. Picking the flower or attempting to transplant it often kills the plant entirely, or sets its blooming cycle back by years.

While no developers have officially proposed a data center for Bayfield County, Washburn residents and county officials are pushing to get ahead of the national trend.

During a recent County Board meeting, residents urged supervisors to prepare for potential data center sprawl by considering public votes and banning nondisclosure agreements. Officials say the issue is already on their radar as part of an ongoing zoning code rewrite.

Read more on the community's concerns, the massive infrastructure requirements for these facilities, and how the county plans to address emerging technology in its future zoning:

As data center development surges across the country, Bayfield County officials say no developer has formally approached them, but residents and supervisors alike are pushing the county to prepare anyway.

Where does our drinking water come from, and how does it connect to Lake Superior?

At this month's Science on Tap program, hydrogeologist Grace Graham will explore the science beneath our feet. Her presentation, "Bayfield County Groundwater Investigations: From Rain and Snowmelt to Lake Superior," will detail ongoing efforts to map local groundwater, inventory artesian wells, and protect regional water quality.

The free event begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at the Alley, 806 Main St. W. in Ashland. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to find a seat, order food, and grab a beverage.

Learn more about the research and how it helps protect our local watershed:

The free-flowing artesian well along Highway 2 west of Ashland is a familiar landmark for Chequamegon Bay residents, but the same groundwater feeds the private wells much of the region
