Although June is coming to an end (I cannot believe it!) and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day has passed, the Ashland County Adult Services team is still encouraging the community to stand up against Elder Abuse!

How, you might ask? Adult Protective Services Social Worker, Pauline Gordon, says "anyone and everyone can stand up to Elder Abuse by helping to combat social isolation. Just by picking up the phone and involving the elders in your community, you can make a difference!"

According to the National Council on Aging, approximately 60% of Elder Abuse cases involve individuals who are socially isolated. A phone call, a friendly chat, or simply being a neighbor that checks-in can go a long way in protecting a community member from Elder Abuse!

Every year, June 15th marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). World Elder Abuse Awareness Day's purpose is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

Although WEAAD has passed, the Adult Services Team at Ashland County Health and Human Services have found a special way to honor the cause! Adult Services Manager, Natasha McFadden encourages the local community that, "everyone at every age can stand up to elder abuse by knowing the warning signs and reporting it!".
