What do you get Rad Dad for Father’s Day? Well since it falls on Go Skateboarding Day I think Cashy and I nailed it with this one!

Our mini ramp has been out of commission for quite a bit from years of weather. I have watched him walk out to the ramp over and over again looking longingly at the sad state it’s in.

When I asked him why we can’t redo it. He said it would be too expensive for us at the time. I asked him why and mentally took notes of everything he listed off that we needed and what he wanted to do.

So, for Father’s Day Cashy and I took the list to Lowe's Home Improvement and used our MyLowe’s Reward Credit Card from Synchrony that gives us flexible financing options to buy everything we needed to accomplish this.

I knew he missed skating the ramp each night and if there was one thing we could do it was surprise him with all the gear and help him make our ramp skateable again!

“Stomp and lean forward!” 🛹

One thing I absolutely love about being a dad is these precious moments that my daughter may forget about but they are core memories that will stick with me forever!

When Cashy was 6 (she’s 9 now) I had taught her how to drop in on our mini ramp but I knew the best way for her to retain all I had taught her was to have her teach me. She knew I already knew how but that didn’t stop her from telling me and showing me the way!

When I’m working with my daughter on new skills my teaching tactics usually entail having her teach me back once she’s learned how to do something. I remember a teacher of mine from when I was a kid tell me that the best way to learn something is to teach it.

These words she’s used in this lesson still come out of her mouth today 3 years later every time she drops in. Sometimes she shouts them and others she mumbles under her breath but she’s never forgotten them!

Gosh I love being a dad!

Learning about leverage 🙌

I love how little Cashy is always so excited to help and learn! So I got her on the drill and taught her how to back out some screws and how to use leverage for the stubborn ones that don’t want to come up.

At first I kind of held the drill for her to keep her in control but she quickly got it all on her own. Then we came across one that didn’t want to come up.

So I showed her how using leverage with a flathead screwdriver you could give it the lift it needed to eventually back out.

Super simple task that we did together but you can typically do as just one person. All you do is slide the flathead under the screw head as much as you can and lift up while backing out the screw.

She did awesome! I love little moments like these where we can teach her something new but it feels more fun instead of learning. Teamwork makes the dream work!

I hope I did this right👷‍♀️

Cashy and I are trying to surprise Nick with a project he’s been wanting to get done for Father’s Day. So we set off to go search for the supplies needed. I found a bag of extra screws labeled for this project and they were all these two sizes. Mostly the smaller ones but neither of us know exactly what sizes they are.

So we put it upon ourselves to hopefully figure it out correctly. Luckily for us there are these little measuring displays at Lowe's Home Improvement making it easier for us to figure it out on our own!

Now looking back on the video, part of me is second guessing myself. I sure hope we got the right size screws for this project!

I cried proud dad tears when I was sent that last clip 🥹

It’s the community energy at the end for me. The way everyone was so stoked for her and that smile you see on her face is just so pure and real and full of self proudness it gets the waterworks going for me!

And here they go again as I write this.

See hasn’t really hit many tubes in her time riding. Don’t get me wrong she has hit some but she just really hasn’t been too into the steel game yet and understandably so. Rails and tubes aren’t as forgiving as other jibs like boxes and can hurt pretty bad to slam on.

So when we were sent these clips of her trying this tube we were somewhat caught off guard because we know her apprehension towards these types of features.

Then to hear that she was hiking the feature over and over (another thing she never does) and progressing her tube skills it just got me! Not only her trying it more than a few times but the fact she was trying to spin off like that last clip blew the minds of both Hype Mom and I.

Then to see that whole community cheer for her at the end when she won her first big check and to see her peers come running over to give her a big hug was just the icing on the cake and I instantly needed some tissues to wipe my eyes.

This is what the snowboard and ski community and action sports in general is all about. It’s about supporting individual progression while having fun in the process. It’s being stoked for others trying and landing something new to them while overcoming the fear of going for it in the first place.

That’s what Woodward does so well at all of their camps. They create an environment like this for kids of all ages to feel welcome and supported to try new things and to push their abilities to new levels. All with fun at the heart of it all!

So incredibly stoked for Small Fry for pushing herself in this mini event. Her smile there at the end will always bring my soft dad heart to tears!

Got our first update from snowboard camp 🏂

Hype Mom and I were just chilling at our apartment in Frisco when I looked down and saw a message from AMax (one of the staff) telling me he snagged some clips of riding with Cashy!

Being away from her while she’s at sleep away snowboard camp for the week this was so awesome to score an update like this. Beyond proud of her riding but to be real we were most proud of what he said about her attitude.

His text read “She has the best attitude seriously!”

That small little text meant the world to both of us parents. To know she’s there on her own and spreading the good vibes as always gave us the biggest smiles!

Summer snowboard camp ✅

Little Cashy just spent a week of shred and summer fun at Woodward Copper Snowboard Summer Camp and she had “the most fun ever!”

This was the first sleep away camp she’s ever been to where she was all on her own for a whole week!

The days were full on fun from wake up to sleep time. They’d spend 8am-3pm on snow shredding and getting progression help from their coach. Then they’d have free time to play and have fun activities after shredding then have dinner and rinse and repeat for 5 days straight!

She made so many great friends and life long fun memories.

One thing we were told upon pick up from both her camp counselor and her coach was that she had the best energy and stoke every single day. She was polite and always included everyone. The best news to receive as a parent!

I’m so glad she had so much fun and she’s already asking if she can come back next summer to do it all again!

Huge thank you to the whole team for all you do for these kids! You all are so awesome in the community you create here!

Why this is so important 👇🏼

For most this is an easy situation to get out of. But for others when you end up in this position you may tend to panic especially when in the lake and there are other boat wakes coming at you. So you’re stuck floating on your belly with your board behind you while you paddle your arms to keep your head above water.

I remember as a kid growing up being in this situation and legit was taking faces full of water from the other wakes and it was kinda scary. So that’s why we used the safety net of a pool to teach this to our daughter before we ever took her out to try wakeboarding on the lake.

The bigger you are the easier it is to kind of roll over so you’re floating on your back because you have the strength to maneuver your board better than a kid would. However when you’re just starting out with wakeboarding this might come as a surprise position to be in and you may not really know how to get back to floating safely on your back.

So for the bigger or older rider you can easily just dip one foot down and kick the other one over while your arms help flip your body. It should be pretty simple to make it around if you do it in a smooth swift motion.

For the smaller riders like you see here. You may need a little help to get flipped over quickly. That’s where you can still do the dip and kick like mentioned above but you can also grab on to the tip of your board and pull it over to get to your back.

Hopefully this helps others know how to get from belly to back and maybe give some simple tricks for parents to teach their kids when this situation comes up!
