Heritage Deodar Cedar to Be Removed from Sunken Gardens This Week

ATASCADERO — A heritage Deodar Cedar tree in downtown Atascadero’s Sunken Gardens will be removed this week after years of decline, according to city officials.

The work, expected to take one day, will require a temporary closure of East Mall during the removal. Nearby businesses will remain open, with parking available at City Hall (East Mall and Lewis Avenue) and along El Camino Real.

The tree, estimated to be around 100 years old, has deteriorated to the point of becoming a safety risk. Its removal will help balance the appearance of the park, following the removal of its adjacent counterpart in 2017. A new cedar will be planted in its place in the near future.

The cedar wood will be transported to Deadwood Revival Design, a local mill and furniture company, and made available to Atascadero residents. Raw wood will be offered this fall, with processed (kiln-dried) wood available in the summer of 2026.

For details on purchasing wood from the tree, contact Deadwood Revival Design at (805) 552‑5897 or visit deadwoodrevivaldesign.com

Living in a small town like ours comes with a deep connection to history — not just the kind you read in textbooks, but the kind we live every day. As the owner of our local newspapers, we often get to look back at moments frozen in time — moments that, in retrospect, seem simpler, but really weren’t. Every generation faces its own challenges, and what may appear minor in the big picture can feel monumental to the people living through it.

H. John Coakley, beloved son of Dr. John D. and Adele C. Coakley and brother to William D. Coakley, passed away peacefully after a life marked by quiet strength, curiosity, and generosity.
