SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Educational Employees Credit Union (EECU), in partnership with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, celebrated the 2025 SLO County School Employees of the Year during an awards dinner held October 20 at Cuesta College.

Since 2022, EECU has proudly sponsored this annual event recognizing top educators and school employees from districts across San Luis Obispo County. This year’s ceremony honored 26 outstanding educators, including the 2025 SLO County Classified Employee of the Year, Cynthia Padgett of Lucia Mar Unified School District, and the 2025 SLO County Teacher of the Year, Krys Chivens of Templeton Unified School District.

EECU representatives Joe Doyland, Business Development Officer, and Carrie Danielson, Paso Robles Branch Manager, joined SLO County Superintendent of Schools Dr. James J. Brescia to present the awards and celebrate the honorees’ achievements.

“These awards shine a spotlight on the amazing educators and staff who go above and beyond to make a lasting impact on students’ lives,” Doyland said. “EECU is honored to partner with the SLO County Office of Education to celebrate their dedication and recognize the difference they make across the county.”

The event is one of six annual countywide programs EECU sponsors throughout Central California and the Central Coast to honor exceptional educators and school staff. For more information about EECU’s educational partnerships and recognition programs, visit myEECU.org

ATASCADERO — On Monday, October 27, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Atascadero Police Department responded to the 8300 block of El Camino Real after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting power lines down across the roadway.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that nine power poles had fallen, blocking nearly two blocks of El Camino Real. The incident occurred when a vehicle towing an oversized load carrying a modular home struck an overhead wire, causing a chain reaction that brought down the remaining poles.

No pedestrians were nearby when the collapse occurred, and only one parked vehicle sustained damage. According to officials, the downed lines were primarily communication lines, resulting in minimal power disruptions to surrounding businesses and residences.

Multiple utility and communication crews are on scene replacing the poles and restoring service, with work expected to continue well into the evening. As of 2:13 p.m., southbound lanes of El Camino Real have reopened, while northbound traffic remains closed and is being diverted westbound at Santa Rosa Road.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area, use alternate routes, and expect delays throughout the evening. The Atascadero Police Department thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as crews work to safely restore normal traffic flow.

ATASCADERO — The San Luis Obispo County Fire Safe Council (SLO FSC), in partnership with the City of Atascadero, will launch a hazardous fuels reduction project along Atascadero Creek as part of ongoing wildfire prevention efforts. The work area will extend from the 3 Bridges parking area to the Salinas River.

Beginning the week of October 27, the project will take approximately three to five weeks to complete. Crews will remove dense, flammable vegetation along both sides of the creek to reduce wildfire fuel, minimize the risk of ignition, and improve emergency access. In limited cases, vegetation removal may extend slightly onto private property with prior landowner approval.

All vegetation removal will be conducted by professional hand crews, with debris chipped and dispersed onsite — no burn piles will remain. The SLO Fire Safe Council will oversee the project to ensure safety and compliance.

“Proactive fuel reduction like this is one of the most effective ways we can protect our community before a wildfire starts,” said David Van Son, Battalion Chief for the City of Atascadero Fire Department. “By maintaining these creek corridors and reducing heavy vegetation, we’re not only lowering fire risk but also improving firefighter access and public safety during an emergency.”

The project is funded through a SLO Fire Safe Council grant.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is once again seeking donations for its 36th annual Christmas Bicycle Giveaway, part of the long-running Season of Sharing program that has provided bicycles and helmets to children in need since 1989.

The program relies on community generosity to provide refurbished bicycles and new helmets to children up to age 15. Donations of new bicycles, new helmets, or monetary contributions for parts are being accepted. While adult bicycles are welcome, children’s bikes are in the highest demand.

Bicycles are repaired at the Sheriff’s Office Honor Farm, where incarcerated individuals assist in refurbishing the bikes, gaining valuable work experience and a sense of community contribution.

Families wishing to nominate a child for a bicycle must submit an application by Thursday, Nov. 20, at slosheriff.org under Community Resources, then Forms and Applications. The Christmas Bicycle Giveaway will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 9 a.m.

Donations can be dropped off at any Sheriff’s Office patrol station or at the Honor Farm on Highway 1. Monetary contributions can be mailed to:

Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation
Attn: Bicycle Fund
P.O. Box 3752
San Luis Obispo, CA 93403

The Sheriff’s Office thanks program partners, including the Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation, Bike SLO County, The Sandlot Group, local police departments, Waste Connections, and the County Health Agency for their ongoing support.

SANTA MARGARITA — Ancient Peaks Winery invites the community to participate in the 4th annual “Walk for Cancer” on Sunday, Oct. 26, a two-mile vineyard walk at Santa Margarita Ranch supporting Cancer Support Community Central Coast. The stroll concludes with food trucks, a live DJ, and a complimentary glass of wine for participants 21 and older.

Walkers can join individually or form teams, with prizes awarded for the highest fundraising individuals and teams as well as the most spirited team. Participants are encouraged to wear pink attire to show solidarity in the fight against cancer.

From the PVJU school board, Soil Conservation Board, Twin Cities Hospital Board, and a member of the SLO and Monterey County Cattlemen associations, as well as the Diversified Producers and Heritage Oaks Bank. While at Heritage Oaks Bank, because of his love of the land, he started gifting a Valley Oak Seedling to anyone who opened a new account.

George and his wife, Elaine, of 61 years, also hosted marriage encounters at their home on the ranch. A pioneer in agriculture, George’s implementation of agricultural management and conservation methods earned him local and national recognition.

A devout Christian, George always placed God above all else. His legacy was to “Be a man of God”.
