This month marks the 100th anniversary of the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim!🐴🌊☀️

Also known as Pony Penning, this is an annual event held in Chincoteague, Virginia, on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July. The event dates back to the 1800s and features the wild horses swimming across the Assateague Channel when the tide is “slack calm,” so the young ponies, which are born during spring or early summer, are safe from any strong currents.

In the 15 years Dick Allen played in the MLB, most notably for the White Sox (three seasons) and Phillies (nine seasons), he was one of baseball’s top sluggers with 351 home runs and 1,119 RBI’s. He was a seven-time All-Star player, and is one of just 26 players in baseball history to win both a Rookie of the Year and MVP awards. Alongside that success, Allen also faced a great deal of hostility and racial injustice during his MLB career.

This past weekend, Dick Allen was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His widow, Willa Allen, shared in her ceremony speech:

“When he was just a child, his teacher asked the class what they wanted to be when they grew up. Dick stood up and said, ‘I’m going to be a Major League baseball player.’ Then he sat down. The other kids laughed because at that time, there weren’t any Black players in the Major Leagues. But he didn’t laugh. He believed it, and now, look at him.”

In 2017, author and historian William C. Kashatus talked to his friends, family, and Allen himself, to chronicle an intimate portrait of his baseball career and personal life, relaying the story through words and photographs of one of the finest baseball players of all time.
