Let me introduce you to the “crotch” mic! This mic is positioned under the ride cymbal, above the kick drum and equidistant to the snare, rack rom and floor tom…oh, and pointed at the drummers crotch. As silly as this may seem, this recording approach can deliver an extremely punchy sound to blend with your other microphones. This morning I used this technique with a SM7b into a UK Sound 1173. The results were choice! Maybe I’ll make a video about it?!

Snagged this phaser. Started messing around with it on the rhodes. This thing is very cool! A ton of possibilities with the design. Really beautiful pedal too! Im pumped to play some guitar through it. There was also like an entire Christmas stocking full of stuff in this box. Nice care put into everything dude! Keep a look out for some videos with this thing soon.

I had a really fun chat with my friend Lewis about Oasis and the Gallagher brothers. Definitely Maybe came out when I was 12 years old and Oasis became instrumental in shaping me as a musician. I loved their music then and with both Liam and Noel Gallagher still writing and recording amazing solo albums, they continue to have an influence on the way I approach music. Oasis seems to be pretty polarizing within the music communities I've been a part of, but I really wanted to dig into this with someone who would have an enthusiasm that matched my own. I think Lewis knocked it out of the park. This was a blast! I hope you all enjoy and would love to hear your thoughts on Oasis.

The look of a man who has some grasp on audio but is completely confounded by videography and photography. I use my ears…but they don’t seem to help with lighting and video!

When I’m working solo…which is a lot of my time, I record from the control room. This morning I’m setting up to do some acoustic guitar.

Most times I track initial ideas with just one microphone. Sometimes I’ll keep those original idea guitars and use them in the final mixes. Other times I come back and use a multi mic setup to capture a fuller sound that I can do more with in the mix.

Today I’m doing a two mic setup. One large diaphragm tube mic (the Rode NTK) to capture the big picture. Then, a cardioid ribbon mic (the Beyerdynamic m160) that is getting a closer perspective. I may swap this out for an AKG 451 depending how I’m feeling about the sound.

I’m working on building an audio community here on Instagram. So I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas on how you mic acoustic guitar and what methods work for you to get the best results!

One of my “Secret Weapon” microphones is the NTK tube mic. I swapped out the stock tube for a black diamond EC88.

This mic slays!

The intro acoustic and the voiceover was recorded through the Rode NTK into a 6176.
