Photos of the 1985 Clarke Central High School varsity football team, which was the last team to win a state championship 40 years ago, are shown. Jefferey Mack, the 1985 team’s free safety and backup quarterback, saw the formula that kept the Gladiators strong through the season’s end. “(Former CCHS varsity football coach Billy Henderson) was one of a kind. He saw things before they happened. When he came to Athens-Clarke County in 1970, right after integration, his goal was to unite people. Black and white players became one team,” Mack said. “Our values were simple: team first, no individuality, just sportsmanship, determination and heart. We practiced hard, gave 110 percent, and it showed. We went 15-0 that season.”Photos courtesy of the Gladius yearbook archives, story by Liya Taylor

Clarke Central High School sophomore Jackson Culver poses in the CCHS Media Center Courtyard on Oct. 30. Culver chose to take social studies department teacher Tyler Graves’ Advanced Placement Psychology class during the 2025-26 fall semester because the subject piqued his interest and has since found the class enjoyable. “I have a really good teacher (and) it’s an amazing class,” Culver said. “We learn how the brain develops, how people think, concepts made by people to describe how people think (and) anything to do with the mind in general.” Photos and story by Maya Pringle
