McMinn Central golf started the week competitive with a powerhouse on the road, then dominated its home course two days later.

The boys’ team fell to Kingston, scoring 167 to the Yellow Jackets’ 150, on Tuesday at Lakeside Golf Course. Kingston’s boys are still one year removed from three straight TSSAA team state championships in Class A.

The Chargers then showed their depth Thursday at Ridgewood Golf Club with Tellico Plains and Greenback visiting. The Central boys’ A team won with a 167, and their B team carded a 180, while Tellico shot a 216 team score. Greenback only had two golfers, not enough to register a team score.

Avery Moore was the lone Central girl finishing both days this week, scoring a 52 against Kingston, then improving to a 47 to win the day individually among four golfers Thursday.

McMinn County High School athletics is eyeing an increasingly popular brand of weight equipment to outfit its new training facility, and it is already more than halfway toward the fundraising goal to purchase that.

MCHS intends to buy 10 sets of commercial-grade PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells. And of the projected cost of $17,000 for the intended purchase, the fundraising effort spearheaded by Mark Lockmiller has already raised $10,100 toward the target, Lockmiller confirmed Friday to The Daily Post-Athenian.

That leaves $6,900 for MCHS to raise before it buys the new dumbbells. For every $1,700 a donor contributes — the cost of one set of the dumbbells — that donor will have their name permanently placed on a PowerBlock rack.
