ENGLEWOOD — McMinn Central had just four playoff wins since 2000 and 14 in its 59-year program history. Now, make it 15.

No Charger first year head coach had won more than seven games in program history. Until J.T. Ostrowski in 2025, with eight.

And only once in the history of the Central football program had the Chargers shut out an opponent in the postseason (42-0 over Notre Dame in 1989) until Friday, when the Chargers completely shut Pigeon Forge’s water off in a 21-0 Class AAA first round victory over the Tigers at Charger Field in Englewood.

The Tigers scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and intercepted three Johnson County passes — all in the first half — and sent the Longhorns to a 45-8 slaughter Friday at Jewell Field to open the Class 3A playoffs.

Tennessee Wesleyan has survived, scrapped, battled and earned itself another shot at an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament championship.

Stina Braun’s goal in the 25th minute held up for the remaining 65, with the Lady Bulldogs staying in control all the way to the 1-0 tournament semifinal win over Milligan on Tuesday at the TWU Athletic Complex.

Wesleyan’s win followed up another 1-0 victory Saturday in the quarterfinals against Brenau, in which Braun scored in the 66th minute off assists from Iara Tello and former McMinn County standout Addison Smith.

The rich got richer last week in the Football Picks Panel, as first place Laura Smith’s panel-best 11-4 output doubled her lead to two games.

One of our sports writers, Drew, and the Advocate & Democrat’s Noah are on Laura’s tracks, while our other sports writer, Gabe, needs a Hail Mary to get back to the top after a 9-6 week kept him in 9th.

Most of the panel is back on McMinn County this week, with nine of 11 thinking they take care of business in their playoff opener in Fayetteville. All but one think McMinn Central and Meigs County fend off upset bids from Pigeon Forge and Johnson County, respectively.

10 of 11 panelists believe Sweetwater’s season comes to an end on the road at Unicoi County, and that unbeaten Happy Valley stays that way against Tellico Plains.

For the panel's picks of college football games, pick up Wednesday's edition of The Daily Post-Athenian!

Pigeon Forge has a Mr. Football candidate in running back Ayden Hood.

McMinn Central’s defense allowed just 15 points per game this season.

Central and head coach J.T. Ostrowski know the Tigers will put the ball in the senior superstar’s hands practically every snap of Friday’s Class 3A first round matchup and Ostrowski said the Charger defense is preparing in earnest for it when the ball is kicked off at 7 p.m. at Charger Stadium.
