A season ago, preseason expectations had Meigs County early on contending, but the Tigers blew those out of the water with a region championship and quarterfinal finish in the 3A playoffs.

This season, the stage is set for the Tigers to break through even further.

And while Meigs is loaded with talent at every position group, whether returning talent or incoming talent, head coach Nathan Simbeck and the program is firm on its belief that future goals or hopes of contention do not matter as much as getting better in the details every single day.

With 22 seniors on the roster and 17 starters returning from last year’s team, McMinn County begins 2025 with expectations to contend for a region championship and make a deep run in the TSSAA playoffs.

At least that is what those on the outside say.

Head coach Bo Cagle, entering his 19th season in charge of the Cherokees, is focused instead on the Tribe’s internal expectations, which are being the best team it can be every Friday and improving week to week.

McMinn Central first-year head coach Jonathan "JT" Ostrowski has been consistent in his rhetoric to the media this offseason: the Chargers are going to surprise people.

Losing 15 seniors from last year's team and undergoing a coaching change after the departure of Matt Moody, it might be expected by some that Central will have a down season. But Ostrowski said his players have completely bought in to the culture, scheme and standard set before them by the Charger coaching staff and are ready to compete.

One likely could not have scripted a worse start for McMinn County in its preseason finale.

A first-play pick six. A one-play 85-yard touchdown drive.

The Cherokees found themselves trailing 21-3 in less than six minutes of game time against Class 3A power Tyner Academy.

But the Tribe settled in and bowed up with a 21-0 run in response, pulling ahead 24-21 before dropping the varsity portion of the scrimmage 28-24. The Cherokee junior varsity squad won 6-0, bringing the entirety of the scrimmage to a 30-28 Tribe “win.”

COALFIELD — With Meigs County setting its sights high for 2025, second-year head coach Nathan Simbeck made it a point to schedule scrimmages with other teams who bear similarly high expectations.

That would definitely describe the Tigers’ final preseason opponent, a Coalfield squad that is coming off last year’s Class 1A state semifinals appearance with a 12-2 record and seeking to finish the deal with a state championship in 2025.

And those Yellow Jackets gave Meigs all it could ask for, with the varsity action that comprised the first half of Thursday’s game-type scrimmage at Coalfield School ending in a 6-6 tie. Coalfield’s junior varsity outscored the Tigers’ younger group in the second half 12-6.

Ella Rose Dahle
Born July 9, 2020, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her great grandfathers Jim Dahle and Robert Phelps, great grandmother Rosemary Phelps, great grandfather George Ackaouy, great grandmother Pearl Ackaouy and her great aunt Marta Morrison.
In just five short years, our sweet Ella Rose lived a life far greater than the number of her days. Born with a rare genetic condition, she met every challenge with a fierce yet gentle spirit. She loved her family with her whole heart. She found joy in music, in having her hair gently played with, and in holding hands.
Ella taught us to slow down, to cherish small victories, and to see the beauty in everyday moments. Her smile could brighten even the darkest days, and she reminded us how much there is to be grateful for. We will forever be proud and thankful to be her parents. Though a piece of us will always be missing, her light will never fade.
Ella, we love you more than words can say, and we will carry you in our hearts until we can hold you again.
She is survived by her parents; Ryann and Hannah Dahle, sisters: Emersyn and Josie Dahle, grandparents; Farley and Emily Morrison and Jason and Angie Dahle; great grandparents Willie R. and Frances Morrison, great grandmother Sonya Dahle; her aunt Rose Morrison and her uncle and aunt Noah and Kristine Dahle; and uncle Graham Dahle.
In celebration of her beautiful soul, we invite all who join us in remembrance to wear vibrant colors (not black).
A Celebration of Ella Rose’s life will be held Saturday at 5pm at Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services North Ocoee St. Chapel with family and friends sharing their memories and love for Ella Rose. The family will receive friends Saturday from 4pm until 5pm at the funeral home.
You can view the service by going to her obituary page at www.jimrushfuneralhomes.com.
