Cuts to Medicaid contained in President Donald Trump’s new budget bill put 37 Georgia nursing homes at risk of closing, according to a study released by Brown University’s School of Public Health.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that President Donald Trump’s new budget bill will slash Medicaid by $1 trillion during the next 10 years.

Athens new county manager, set to be approved Tuesday, has been called out in two lawsuits for events pertaining to his previous job.

The finalist for county manager, Robert Cowell, is scheduled to be formally approved Tuesday, July 15th at a special session of the Athens Clarke County Mayor and Commission. Cowell was selected from approximately 50 candidates by a committee of commissioners.

Over $200 million dollars in federal grants meant for Georgia’s public school system have been frozen by the Trump administration. The president of the Georgia Federation of Teachers, Verdalia Turner, has asked that a special session of the Georgia General Assembly be called to fund the shortage from the state’s $15 billion surplus.

About twenty residents of Georgia’s District 10 stood along Barnett Shoals Road protesting Representative Collins. They were organized by progressive political group Indivisible Georgia 10. The Republican Congressman did not attend the office hours, which were scheduled from 11 am to 2 pm.

An investigation is underway after one inmate died on Tuesday and two others were found unresponsive at the Athens-Clarke County Jail.

A release from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office states that on Tuesday, July 8, jail staff discovered a 31-year-old African American male with an unknown medical issue inside one of the housing units. Despite life-saving measures by staff, Emergency Medical Services and the ACC Fire Department, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Staff members who work with Representative Mike Collins, a Republican who represents the 10th District of Georgia, will visit Clarke County on Thursday.

Representative Collins’ staff will be available from 11 am to 2 pm at the Athens-Clarke County Fire Station 7 on South Barnett Shoals Road in Athens. According to a release, constituents will be allowed to speak with the staff on an individual or family basis. No appointments are necessary.

Additionally, recording devices are not permitted.

Staff members who work with Representative Mike Collins, a Republican who represents the 10th District of Georgia, will visit Clarke County on Thursday.
