Visitation for Craig James Shumard MD, age 65, of Fairbury, Neb. will be on Friday, Aug. 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home at 2414 "H" Street in Fairbury. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the American Lutheran Church, 1111 12th St., in Fairbury with Pastor Rob Corum officiating. Lunch will follow at On the Bricks, 508 E St., Fairbury. A private family burial will be at a later date. Memorials to family choice. Cards may be sent to the Shumard family in care of Jefferson Community Health & Life, PO Box 277, Fairbury, NE 68352.

With the 2025-26 school year right around the corner, it is that time of year when the community will have to learn some new faces.

Included among those new faces is the face of the new West Holt 5-12 band and choir teacher, Mrs. Karen Barnes.

Barnes, who is a 2010 graduate of Papillion La Vista High School in Omaha, majored in music education and earned her master’s degree in Curriculum and Planning from Wayne State College.

AREA BASEBALL UPDATE: After a loss to Valentine last evening, the Atkinson Post 86 baseball team will play again tonight against Hi-Line to determine who will advance to the championship game against Valentine tomorrow evening, July 29. If Atkinson wins tonight, they'll need to defeat Valentine twice tomorrow to be crowned area champions.

AREA TOURNAMENT UPDATE: After a 20-4 victory last night, Atkinson will take on the winner of Valentine and Sheridan County tomorrow, July 27, at 8:00 p.m. with a spot in the championship game on the line.

The 2025 Nebraska Senior Legion Baseball Class C Area 7 bracket has been released! Atkinson Post 86 will take on Hi-Line in round one on Friday, July 25 in Valentine at 8:00 p.m. The winner of the double-elimination area tournament will advance to the Class C Senior Legion State Tournament in August.

The West Holt Huskies National FCCLA Leadership Conference qualifiers were given a send-off today by the Atkinson Fire Department. The ladies will leave for Orlando, Florida early tomorrow morning, July 4, to compete in the 2025 National FCCLA Leadership Conference.

What was known as “The Stagecoach Bar and Grill” in Stuart has recently fallen under new ownership, received a new name, and a whole new menu makeover.

Doug and Erin Erb of Stuart recently took ownership of what was formerly The Stagecoach Bar and Grill in Stuart, and plan on having a grand re-opening for the business under the name “The Central Bar” on Tuesday, July 1.

After much deliberation between the two, D. and E. Erb elected to pull the trigger on this new chapter of their lives a little over four months ago.

A Quilt of Valor was presented to Dale Doolittle on Friday, May 2 at the Sandhills Wellness Center in downtown Atkinson.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national organization founded in 2003 by “Blue Star” military mom Catherine Roberts and made up of volunteer quilters across the nation.

The quilt was made by Diane Osborne, Emily Osborne, Mallory Hunter, and Denise Schaaf.

D. Osborne and Linda Olson presented Doolittle with his quilt on Friday, May 2.
