As a native of Monroe, I grew up unaware of the powerful legacy of Robert F. Williams. It wasn’t until I left home to attend college that my understanding began to change.
In 1997, my theater professor, Nefertiti Burton, challenged and cultivated my mind, encouraging me to explore where I came from and the history that shaped it. That moment sparked something in me.
Since then, it has been my personal journey to share the story of Robert F. Williams with anyone willing to listen. I’ve come to realize that I grew up standing on the shoulders of a giant—a man who once lived just one street over from where I lived. Though his time was before mine, his courage and legacy remain forever woven into the fabric of Monroe, North Carolina.
